Acceptance Letters and Student Loans
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:09:44 AM »
Hi all.  I recently was accepted into an MA program at the University of Leeds.  I was accepted with conditions (I have to get my bachelors and give them 2 letters of recommendation) and I won't satisfy those conditions for another 2 weeks.  When can I do my Fafsa and apply for loans?  I'd love to start asap, and I apologize if this is a redundant question.  Thanks in advance.

First, congratulations on your acceptance!

Second, You can apply now!  The conditions set by the Uni of Leeds have no bearing on the FAFSA/US Dept of Education's ability to determine your EFC.

Just remember to gather your paperwork (SSN, Driver's License #, W-2, your/your parents' 2009 Tax Return, Current bank statements), and apply for a PIN to sign everything electronically.  You'll also need the school's "code" for FAFSA (I'm pretty sure there's a drop down menu during the application that will end up telling you Leeds' code,-and you have to select "Foreign" in the State menu before typing "Leeds" and it will pull it up... if I remember correctly)

Things are pretty well spelled out on page 39 of this pdf: http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/attachments/siteresources/Funding_Education_Beyond_HS_2010-11.pdf

Thanks for the info!  I guess I know how I'll be spending tomorrow afternoon when I finish my finals.   ;)

Congrats!! What will you be studying?

I would try to get the letters to them as soon as possible. Mine were written by 2 people I know that work at a college. Thought no way would they like the letters but I got accepted. Fill out the FAFSA, it's really easy to that online now.

Thanks! You too! What are you studying?  I'm studying Performance, Culture and Context.  I filled out my Fafsa, but they said I don't qualify for grants- so now I'm a little unsure about where to go for my loans since they've changed everything around.  This is all so confusing.

Since you're doing postgraduate studies, you're not eligible for Pell Grants.  You are, however, eligible to receive loans (the amount you can receive is dependent on your EFC (Estimated Family Contribution)...and this should be emailed to you pretty quickly, if not already).   Next, you'll have to contact whoever handles US Loans at your university, to make sure they can access your SAR (Student Aid Report), since it is not sent to them directly.

We're all a bit confused right now because of the changes coming into effect, but hopefully your university will be able to clear up at least SOME of the details. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply PS, but the info she (the lady from school who deals with my administrative details) sent me is for Sallie Mae which I know is no longer who we go through.  I need to email her again I suppose and ask about the SAR thing.  I feel like such a nuisance, and since I'm confused I don't know what specifically to ask about.
