Hilarious! How little some americans know about England!
« on: May 19, 2010, 01:23:32 PM »
 ;D :D

I had to share this story as it cracks me up!

I recently went into the bank to deposit money.  The bank teller (who was about my age - mid 20's) asked:

Her:  "Would you like to set up a savings account with us today?"

Me:  "No thank you, I am moving soon and it wont be very accessable."

Her:  "Oh where are you moving to?"

Me:  "England"

Her:  "Oh, what language do they speak there?"

At this point I just stared with this blank stare like...am I being caught on candid camera/are you for real look then say...

Me:  "Umm English"

Her:  "Oh"

LOL how little some americans know about different countries.  ;D

That's too funny! When I lived in England, my grandmother and mom asked me if they had washing Machines and refrigerators.  I had them totally convinced for a few minutes that I had to wash everything by hand with a washboard.  ;) and that we had to buy blocks of ice for the "ice box"  ;)

I got used to hearing it as dh lived in the US for nearly 11 years.  I'd expect some of these stupid questions as my DH is from Scotland, not England, but I can sympathize anyway with the ignorance.  Here's a few good ones we've heard over the years.

"Does he speak Scottish?  He speaks English so well how long did it take you to teach him?"  "Is there a moon there?" My uncle, who incidently has a PhD, asked "do they have electricity?" That's someone who's qualified to teach university-- kinda scary.

Stranger:   Where ya from DH:  Scotland Stranger:  Why are you here.  DH: It fell into the ocean.  I made a boat and rowed it all the way hereStranger: Wow. How interesting.  I've never heard that.  How sad.  Enjoy the U.S.

I too came here from Ohio (grew up in Cincinnati) and was asked, among other things, if Scotland was in England. The area of Cincy where I lived has a lot of people who might refer to themselves as 'Scotch-Irish' (i.e., Ulster Scots), and those types would usually say, 'Oh, I'm Scotch!' (oh, you're a whisky are you?) or 'That's my homeland!' (no, it was your great-great-great grandparent's homeland). Drives me crazy.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

My mom asked me if they celebrate the 4th of July here. I told her that they might celebrate American Independence for different reasons.  ;)

Oh man, don't even get me started on this stuff. I'm not very cultured, but I'm leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of people I know. Since I told my coworkers I was going to be moving to Scotland to marry my fiance and live, I got a ton of bizarre responses/questions. Some would mistakenly say I was moving to Ireland, and I would correct them and say "Scotland," and they would say, "Isn't that the same thing?" *slaps forehead*

The best one yet is one of my naive managers thinks I'm going to have to learn how to speak Scottish before I move there. Sheesh.

My sister ask me if England celebrate Thanksgiving? If I have met the Queen? How English men are in bed compared to American men? Do the British men really drink heavily and stay drunk most of the time? Are the women of England really all tarts? I have been ask some really stupid questions by my relatives in the USA.

Hey I am close to Cinci!   :P

I grew up across the river in N Kentucky.  Lived briefly on the west side of Cincy as a young adult.  Like a lot of other people in the area I have a German maiden name.

I love the fact that I live in a VILLAGE.  Therefore, everyone back home pictures me living in a Victorian village...with no electricity, running water, cars or shops and working on a farm (slaughtering our own meat/poultry out on in the barn, milking cows for our homemade oat cereal, shearing sheep and making our own clothes out of the wool, etc.).  It's lovely.

It's also "fun" trying to explain to people that I live in England and the United Kingdom and Great Britain.

I lived for a few months in Westwood and for about a year in St Bernard (was never sure if that was considered east or west).
My ex-husband was from the west side and went to Elder.
Spent most of my childhood in Boone County.
