Ultimate Comfort Foods
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:44:00 PM »
I just realised my ultimate comfort food is corn. Tortilla chips with salsa. Cornbread / corn muffins. Corn mixed with mashed potatoes (this is the most comforting thing for me ever, and I have no idea why, other than that several other members of my family do it this way, so it just makes me feel better and its always what I want when I'm hungover, ill or depressed.) Corn on the cob. Basically, anything with corn! And its so comforting that once I start eating it, I never want to stop, which is a bit of an issue I am working on. :P

So what types of food comfort you the most?  :)

I'm not really like that with a food but with Coffee. When I'm having a really hard time of things I drink lots of Coffee...today I drank an entire 10 cup pot of it on my own. Which I think has to do with going to bed after 11 last night and getting up at 5.30 this morning with my daughter who decided it was time to get up, rather than being emotional about things (I hope! :P)

During the worst period in my life (the 6 months before I moved to the UK in 2007) I was drinking 4-6 quadruple shot mochas a day!

Chinese takeaway.  My dad had more vacation/family leave time than my mom did when I was growing up so he stayed home with me when I was ill but he couldn't cook.  Since my dad loved Chinese food, and they'd do soup, so he'd get me soup and then an entrĂ©e.  When I have a really bad day or feel like my head is caving in, I want Chinese food.  Even dh learned that one quickly.  I remember after a particularly bad day, he just looked at me and didn't really even have to ask, but just ordered.  Any more when I say I need Chinese food, he doesn't even argue.  I think this might be extending beyond Chinese to Asian food in general, because Thai food or even curry appear to be adequate substitutes.  Not sure what's going on there though.

Potatoes - any style. Mashed is probably the ultimate comfort, but I will even eat slices of raw potato with a little salt on them. My mom would always give us a slice when she was cutting potatoes. Ironically, my Irish potato loving husband thinks this is totally weird.

Mine is pasta of any kind.  Especially lasagne.  My grandma used to make her own pasta and my family eats spaghetti or lasagne with every celebratory meal.  Thanksgiving and Christmas = turkey and all the regular side dishes and spaghetti.  It feels like a hug from my grandma :)

Awww.... pecan pie is like a hug from my grandma. [smiley=blush.gif]

Also, fresh biscuits, with sausage or with gravy or just with butter and honey. They remind me of one of my great-grandmothers. Her homemade ones were the best thing ever!

Cornbread and chocolate skillet cake with runny icing reminds me of my other great-grandma (she loved her cast iron skillet... lol). She made the best cornbread and that chocolate cake was amazing - she made it for my birthday when she saw me. I wish I had that recipe!

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (preferably made with milk)

And definitely this... I don't know where that comes from, though. It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy!

But possibly nothing reminds me of my childhood more than sopapillas with butter and honey from this crap Mexican buffet in Texas called Pancho's. I used to sit and plow through a whole basket of them after church every Sunday.  :) But the rest of the food there is so horrible, its hard to convince myself to go there just for the free sopapillas nowadays.  :P Still, its one of my fondest food memories!

Oh and Chex Mix - homemade as my mom always made it around Christmas and I loved it! She would ship it to me in Texas b/c we didnt have grocery stores ;-)

Maybe I should attempt it here but damn all those carbs but I guess its worth it if it makes ya feel better!

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (preferably made with milk)

this too! always reminds me of a cold Jersey day and the funny thing I didnt start eating tomato soup until I moved to Texas.  Make it with milk and top with cheese and yummmm

You should try to make some for the Fourth. You could use the regular Shreddies in place of the Chex. I'm thinking I could munch down on some Chex Mix with a few brewskies.  ;)

Potatoes (but not raw!) or pasta for me. Just about anything carb-heavy, tbh. Also, Mauritian-style lentils & rice, which I suppose is slightly healthier.

I have 60 packets of regular ranch but no spicy ranch but you can add cayenne pepper I suppose!
Where did you get it? In the states I am guessing ;-)

Dig a potato out of the ground, peel it and give yourself a little slice with sprinkle of salt. Delish!!
