Hey, everyone -- just a super-quick note to thank you all sooo much for the suggestions!  Okay, so I couldn't stop myself... I went ahead and bought her an engagement ring!  I was with a buddy of mine.  We were in his car, on the way to do some of this romantic shopping, and I called to let my fiancĂ©e know that I was not going to be able to meet her on Skype for the evening.  My friend piped up and said, "Tell her I want to know what size ring she wears."  What could I do but obey?   :)  Too transparent, I know, and now she will have figured out that I've done ... but just hearing the happiness & excitement in her voice was well worth it.  My friend and I went to every store we could over the evening, and I picked the prettiest, best ring I was able to afford.  It will be ready the day before she arrives - June 9.  Now I just need to figure out how to give it to her!   :)  :) :)

Still gotta work on the other stuff... will be making a banner for her over the weekend, I think.  I found some online website where you can design your own banner.  But those are like $30 or so.  I think something I make myself will be more memorable and meaningful.  Now, gotta get that movie everyone was talking about!!

Just can't wait Only 6 days and she will be here!!!

<knees shaking & quaking>

Cheers!
Teddy

Awwww, you really are a sweet guy! I hope everything turns out just the way you want it to. Be sure that whatever you do when you pop the question, you have some sort of camera at the ready to capture some pics of the moment. Or better yet, set up a video camera in an inconspicuous place.  ;)

Teddy,

My Husband and I did the same thing! He came just this past May and we had the ceremony in my mother's house with all of our family. Our big wedding is on July 31, but we had the civil ceremony for visa purposes. Honestly, the ceremony itself is quite romantic in itself. I didn't realize what a big deal it would be, since our big wedding is in July, but I bawled the entire ceremony! It was the most precious thing EVER! We went to dinner the next day and walked around Pittsburgh. It was great.

Don't be too overwhelmed with being romantic, your wife will just love being married to you. At least, that's how I felt with my new husband. You could set up a really lovely scene after the ceremony. Have some friends light candles and a bottle of wine for when you come home?

Don't be too worried about romance...being married itself is quite a special thing!

Good luck and Congrats!

May God bless your marriage!!

Hannah

This was a great "conversation" and so I'm just adding an update...  My, urm, wife was not able to make the original date for her visit due to a host of obstacles, but did come to the US on July 3.  We were married on July 20, and I have flown back with her to Shore-by-Sea.  Will be here until Aug 26, then returning home to work on the visa stuff.

I used many of the suggestions given, including making banners, get Hershey's kisses, and so on.  We watched "The Holiday" and both enjoyed ourselves immensely.  Thanks to everyone who contributed.  Our little wedding at the county courthouse was videotaped by a friend and we have it on DVD now.  Will renew our vows at some point in the future.  Very excited and nervous about everything!!

Cheer!

Thanks, Jewlz!  I will definitely be chattering away here once I get back home to the US the end of next week.  The visa process will begin in earnest, plus plans for dealing with my house, my dog, and my belongs, and trying to remember everything I've learned during my stay here in the UK.  Handling the money, understanding the various accents, negotiating the traffic signs, all the simple stuff one takes for granted...  I've noticed how odd it is to not see all the familiar brands and products on the shelves and realize something as simple as looking a favorite snack will be a little daunting.  But, a FUN challenge!!  Real life begins now!!

Cheers,
~Terry

Aww.. thanks MapleLeafGirl  :) ... an adventure is will be, especially coming into it with my wife already having 4 children.  Just hope I can find some friends over here.  Just one more week in my UK stay, then back home to the US to work on my visa.

Ate at a great restaurant yesterday - JR's American Diner in Brighton.  An American flag fluttered in my face as I walked in the door, and so funny to see all the American memorabilia from the '50s.

Cheers!

When you get your spousal visa sorted:

There's a couple of recent food thread mentioning American style diners:

And a great way to make friends and get UK work experience is volunteering:

Good luck and may the visa be processed quickly!  :)

I would like to once again thank everyone who contributed to this thread.  Here we are creeping up on a year of being married, with about 6 months of face-to-face time, and just this week I got my spousal settlement visa!

Maybe I need to start a new thread:

"Please Help Me Be a Good Husband"

Cheers!
