I, my sister, both my kids and my 3 grandchildren spent early infancy with cats and no special precautions were taken or considered necessary.

They would have to have a court order to stop you taking your baby home and I can't see them getting  one because of cats. Four dangerous dogs, maybe, but 4 cats? Nope.  As for the midwife or hv not visiting, that sounds like rubbish too.

I'd tend to agree with this.

Although I was pregnant in the US 20 years ago, I do remember concern about toxoplasmosis.  I owned a cat, and he did accidentally scratch me while trying to play.  I got a blood test, it was negative, and life went on.

I too was told all the horrible old myths about cats and babies, choosing to ignore them.  If you get a midwife who has the MIL's attitude, I'd complain and request another.  Hopefully, you'll get someone who loves cats and knows that those old stories are fiction.

Thank you guys so much! My gut told me there was just no way that what she said could be true but I found the ever so slight chance that it could be true terrifying. :-(

I had two cats (only have one now) and from my experience, when I brought my kids home from the hospital, they have wanted nothing to do with the squirmy loud human type thingy and kept well clear. I have never made any allowances for them, nor have I cat proofed my kids and house, nor have I kid proofed my cats etc...

The midwive will not have anything to say about your having pets, nor will the health visitor, they won't even ask you about it. Its none of their concern. They do check to make sure you aren't suffering from ppd, and that there are any child protection issues for them to be concerned about. They won't care if you have cats or not.

What a load of ole tosh. Dont worry yourself. xx
Ive had both of my children in the UK (and boy what an experience compared to American hospitals!!!) and TBH you wont be wanting the midwife and health visitors visiting. They are more hassle than anything else in my opinion. LOL

I didnt slag them off. I meant it is more a hassle with the home visits in the long run, not their care which I am all for.

[mod hat on]

This thread is about cats and how they may affect babies, taking home babies from the hospital, etc. If you want to debate the pros and cons of midwives and health visitors, start another thread. If you want to debate the pros and cons of having your baby in the US versus the UK, start another thread.

Thank you.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I think the pros on having cats around babies far out weigh the cons, send your mother in law some of these stories, seems more dangerous to not have cats around ;)
