Cool Whip ?
« on: June 05, 2010, 11:20:07 AM »
I know there has been threads on this before and I know mirrajay was looking into this too BUT has anyone tried the Dream Topping stuff?

I want to make the American Flag cake but need cool whip and I want some first hand experience if someone used something else.

Thanks in advance

In my experience Dream Topping is too light and fluffy. I prefer double cream with some real vanilla added and some sugar and whisk it until it is really, really thick.

But I wonder if you could make the Dream Topping with single cream to get something more like Cool Whip? Lighter than regular whipped cream, but heavier than the Dream Topping whisked with milk. Hmmm. Might be worth an experiment. Jenn, you could always try some now and see what you think before you commit to using it on your cake for the party. Eat it with some fruit or something!  :)

Homemade whipped topping recipe ^^ I've seen it on a couple of other forums, I've not used it because  the idea of cool whip frightens me :) But some other people say it works well, but there's a negative comment on the recipe *shrug*

I dont know... the recipe doesn't really sound appealing and it seems complicated, but who knows?  [smiley=huh2.gif] Just making whipped cream would be far easier than that!  :-\\\\

I'd just personally do homemade whipped cream as well.   :)

Cool whip scares me!  :P

I doubt the recipe is more scary than how they make actual cool whip, anything that synthetic is just totally gross, but it's there for anyone that wants it :)

I've never eaten cool whip, I have no idea why you'd use it over whipped cream, unless you were looking for a lighter calorie or non dairy option :)

That is the only reason why I would want it. But its also a lot lighter than whipped cream and I don't think it would fall flat or melt as fast as the real deal.  ;) I am sure you could do some sort of whipped cream mixed with meringue or find some other solution, but I have no idea.

Me too.  I really need a low fat option for health reasons.  Any ideas?

Creme fraiche. Not the same, but lower in fat. Or low fat Greek yoghurt. Those are what I would substitute, anyhow.  :)

yeah maybe the OP wants Cool Whip specifically because it lasts longer as a cake topping versus whipped cream?  I'm not even sure if that's true, as I haven't used it for that purpose, but I think it might be.

I've used regular double cream, whipped with vanilla (and a bit of sugar) as a cake topping, for a Tres Leches Cake, and it held up rather well over the course of the afternoon.  Better than I thought it would, anyway.
