Hello everybody
« on: August 18, 2004, 03:57:15 PM »
Hi everybody. I'm David, and I live in Raleigh, NC with Maureen, my wife of 10yrs. We both are very interested in moving to the UK to work and live. I'm basically on a fact finding mission right now and it seems it's not very easy to get into England. Unlike the US where we will let every illegal immigrant from any country in the world in and then provide support for them. So, any hints, suggestions, advice, etc. on moving to England would be greatly appreciated.

It isn't. Do some more looking around in the visa forum, there are threads on this already. But, in short, do you or your wife have British parents? Do you have a job skill the UK may have a need for? Would you consider being a student? Are you an artist?

These are just some of the first questions you need to answer as there are many kinds of visas.

There are a lot of people over here who would say the same thing about the UK. I'm sure you meant this in jest but some folks on this forum don't find anything particularly funny about immigration on either side of the pond. Just a suggestion to tread lightly!  :)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Welcome!!

If you have a professional skill that a local company in the UK needs and they can't find any people in the UK or EU to fill, you may be able to get a work permit from them.  There are some different ways to go about it, and you will find more information on the Visas section of http://www.britainusa.com

Ditto.  Not a good topic on which to throw general statements around.
However... welcome, and all the best.

Thanks for the info about the visa forum. Today is my first day here so I'm still trying to get my bearings so to speak. We do not have British parents and I'm not sure what skills are needed in the UK to say if I have the skills needed or not. I graduated from college in 1997 with BA's in Management and Marketing so I dont know if I would qualify for student visa. I'm not an artist but I am a vocalist. you can check out my bands website at www.agonydivine.com [nofollow] ; I'm going to start researching the different types of visas available first I think. Thanks for the help.

Sorry. I certainly didnt mean to offend anybody and if I did I am sorry. This is my first day and I dont want to get started off on the wrong foot. Thanks for the advice :)

No offense taken, which is why I made sure to add the wink  ;).
I do tend to get slightly irked by general statements... in general.
If that makes any sense.

Hi David and welcome and best of luck on your quest.

As for being illegal... there are plenty here and with just the same issues as in the USA ,  and while I will not advise you do that I do know people who have lived places illegally and survived.

Still the best bet is to find a way to do it legally.  If you have a band it might work to your advantage to do it that way.

Thank you. were only gonna try to come over legally. I'm the type of person that believes in and follows the rules/laws. It seems as if it's going to be very difficult but I dont give up easily. Thanks again for the welcome.
