BP Oil Disaster - Imagine if....

This is so crazy! I don't think all people understand the magnitude of this spill/disaster.
I know in the US there was a thing going around looking for donations and people freaked saying you made a profit of xxx million dollars and you want US to donate to help you clean up YOUR mess...

We are a long way from this being over but I thought this map helped me SEE clearly how big it was - heck it could cover most of the UK!

I wondered if there was a way the oil and water could be sucked up and separated. Too simple a solution. ???

Its so sad!!! My family's beach house is never going to be the same. Oil started coming to shore on Friday and now its covering alot of the beach. Hurricanes are one thing because you just rebuild (which we have had to do a few times) but this just destroys EVERYTHING!!!

Apparently BP is upset because apparently Obama sent 'Anti-British' comments in an open letter. Does it make me Anti British because I want something done about this? I'm not annoyed about them being a British company versus them being a massive company who being is a PITA.

BP, I have zero sympathy for you. If you are so freakin' worried about your reputation then quit wasting time calling Obama a 'meany-pants' and DO something about that damn oil spill.

I'm sure there is so much more I could reading and learning about this, but I cringe every time I see a glimpse of the damage. That's the gulf after all, that's home...

Thanks for sharing that Jenn.  I was appalled when I changed the location to Coventry - it covered from London to Leeds and over to Cardiff!!

When it first happened I asked Mom how it would affect them (they're on the gulf coast of FL in Bradenton).  Her exact reply? "Oh it won't affect us, we don't really go to the beach."  ::)

An excerpt from Charlie Brooker's piece on the oil spill:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/jun/14/charlie-brooker-bp-oil-spill

Quote from: Charlie Brooker
Never mind that BP is an international company. Never mind that 39% of its shares are held in the US, that half its directors are American. It's got the word British in the title, and that'll do. It genuinely feels like our fault. Like you, I've never supervised the offshore drilling policy of a major oil company, but I can't help feeling responsible. It's like watching a news report in which someone with your surname has been caught having sex with a hollowed-out yam. The disgrace is shared, however irrationally.

And to be honest, the Americans are thus far admirably restrained about the whole thing. If a company called Texan Gloop belched a carpet of black gunk over Norfolk, we'd be surrounding the US embassy and burning sarcastic effigies of Boss Hogg within minutes. And that's just Norfolk: flat earth and windmills. Having vandalised Louisiana and laminated thousands of pelicans, the BP spill now threatens to disfigure the Miami coastline, corrupting its relentlessly cheery blue-and-yellow colour scheme with a sea of rainbow black. Congratulations, people of Britain. Even though, strictly speaking, it isn't your fault.

Man, that dude is funny.  :)

I love Charlie Brooker.

ETA:  He is the only one in British media that I remember defending the US efforts in Haiti when every other media outlet outside the States seemed to want to be highly critical.  His Newswipe on the coverage was one of my favourites.  He doesn't pull punches with a lot of American news outlets, but he also sees through the BS in British media as well.

I totally agree, although his books are somewhat depressing.   :)
