In my spare time, I'm writing a story a young Western woman living in Japan and her coping with living in a homogeneous society. Most of it is dealing simple daily tasks like trying to make friends, dealing with a language barrier, getting a job where she ends up tutoring English. I'm about a 100K in so far, and I think I'm about half way done.

Just writing it for fun; I don't plan on sending it out.

Anyone else?

I've always wanted to write, but for now I just edit. And it's mostly erotic romance type of things. Anyone else?

Hi E&C, I got an MFA years ago but haven't been writing much in the UK. So I'm lapsed. Published a couple of stories in very obscure places. My tip for Elephant & Castle is to go to the Southbank Poetry Library on the fifth floor of the Southbank Centre, open from, hmm, 11 to 8 Tuesday through Sunday. It's a quiet place to write and think which was great for me as I live with someone in a cluttered little house. I'm not a big sitting in cafes and writing sort and around here there isn't much. You can try the Beehive in Kennington a five minute walk off the Walworth Road, by far the prettiest pub in the area, and they have books and paintings on the walls. I'm leaving because my visa expires on Monday. There are quite a few writer's groups I think, but I just haven't had much time in the past few years- I used to go though. Bermondsey has some pretty cafes. My favorite is Scooterworks on Lower Marsh behind Waterloo. It's good to have a bike here to get out quickly, that's my tip!

I'd be interested in a writer's group.  I've been working on writing projects for a while in the hopes of someday getting something published.  I write fiction, but I'd probably make more headway in non-fiction.

I've been writing fiction regularly for about 5 years - mostly modern/romance/chick-lit style stuff. I would love to publish a novel one day, but I'm not sure I can write something worthy of publishing (I don't usually admit it, but I actually write online fanfiction, so I'm a bit nervous to try to write a proper original novel)

I wanted to be a writer or a journalist when I was younger (I had some really good praise from my teachers for a poem I wrote when I was 10 and a detective story I wrote for GCSE English when I was about 14), but I ended up going into science - I blame my GCSE Geography course for having a module on earthquakes and volcanoes because after that,  I wanted to study them and in order to do that I needed to become a geophysicist... which meant I had to take maths and physics A levels (but two masters degrees and 2 years of job hunting later and I still haven't managed to find a job in that field) :P.

Ohh such an interesting thread! Not in London but will be moving over to the UK soon if things keep going as they are.

I do write and I love it. Mostly Fantasy/Paranormal novels. I can't ever think of not writing. I belong to a few writer groups but am always open to more. :)

I do have a few things published out there with more coming soon. I'm currently working on a new project that i'm hoping will finally land me a proper agent. First draft to it should be done by end of this month and then I'll be editing it to within an inch of its life.

Anywho... love to see more writers and editors out there :)

Hi!

Not a writer, more of a reader. :)

Have you tried searching meetup[dot]com for writers' groups? There are some writer groups/writers cafe-type things that may be of interest and they tend to be in different areas in London.

Might help get the inspiration juices flowing. :D

Seriously! That sounds quite interesting!

I paid my uni bills and now pay all my bills with writing. I mainly just do piecework on various things to top up my income but the bread and butter is writing for a financial news wire.

That said, I'm moving to Israel/OTs in September and I'm hoping to get into proper journalism on the side... Anyone know anyone who'd be interested in pieces on that region?
"As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me.

They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are ‘only doing their duty’, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life."

I got my BA in English and Creative Writing, but was really close to going for Environmental Geology because of a unit in plate tectonics. Sometimes I wish I had because the job prospects are much better there than they are in publishing, which is what I'm getting my MA in.

Have you read any Kurt Vonnegut? He's a good example of person who was always into writing but studied science instead. He got his BA in Chemistry and was studying for an MA in Anthropology but the university rejected the dissertation he submitted. It eventually accepted one of his fiction novels thirty years later and awarded him the MA (after he was famous, of course).  :P
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

It's so awesome to see so many people who love to write (and read!) I can't wait to move over in a few years and see if I can hook up with any other authors etc. Hopefully by then I've landed an agent so fingers crossed!!

I'm a lapsed fiction writer, but I'm trying to get back into it.
I'd be interested in a writer's group in London :) I'm out in West London, but can travel.

I'm writing something trite at the moment just to get used to writing everyday! :)

I've written some fiction in the past (unfinished and unpolished, but at least it's something). ;)

I'm debating whether to do this year's NaNoWriMo. It's usually fun (if stressful), but I'm tentatively planning to visit the US for the second half of November, which would throw a very large wrench into the works.

I've been  thinking about that too, It's why I'm writing this thing now, as sort of pre-marathon prep :)
