I've seen coarse-ground polenta in the foreign foods section of Waitrose.  It's essentially the same thing.

I have been told there is actually a difference and that polenta will dry out the cornbread more so wasn't sure if anyone has actually found the American style cornmeal vs the Italian polenta

check that recipe out it has yellow cornmeal or polenta flour as the main ingrediant.

I have 1 lonely box of Jiff cornbread that I am waiting to make chili with ;-)

There's cornmeal at our local Sainsbury's. It's excellent for both skillet cornbread and polenta. :) It's in the "Asian/Indian" section for us.  But, this Sainsbury's has some wacky ideas about where to stick dry goods. (There is a baking section...and then...three rows down...there is a flour section).

It's essentially polenta (flour) you're wanting, most likely in the Asian / World foods section of your grocery store.  You may also find it in the gluten free section as it's often used as a substitute for flour.  If you're wanting a larger quantity that what you can get in the grocery store you may want to try an Asian foods store or market.

If you order from Ocado they may have a cornbread readymix you can buy - I believe it's Jif, but it's been a while since I've looked.

Italian Polenta's basically a boiled polenta flour meal or dish and comes in a plastic wrap packaging.

Happy baking!   :)

It is worth looking at an Asian store as well - I've found different grounds of corn meal in the larger stores. Reasonable prices as well! :)

I just use Natco Fine Cornmeal, which is located in the Carribean foods section of the big Tesco near us.  :) It works just fine for me!

I made some AWESOME corn muffins a couple of week back.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/bubbas-corn-muffins-recipe/index.html

Since you can't get self-rising cornmeal here (its hard enough to find the regular stuff!) I think I added a tablespoon of baking powder and a teaspoon and a half of baking soda. Can't remember. You'd have to google the substitute for regular cornmeal, which is what I did. Anyway, they were really, really good. DH normally hates cornbread, but he ate 3 of these in one go, which really surprised me. They're very moist, so not your traditional cornbread, but very tasty, and you could add sugar if you like them sweeter. I found creamed style corn at Tesco, too. You can order that and the cornmeal online for delivery tomorrow!  :)

I ended up using the polenta and the recipe turned out amazing, everyone loved it.  My bf's flatmates even convinced me to make more on Sunday because they liked it so much!

Also made a 7 layer dip and everyone loved it.  I keep trying to tell everyone here when it comes to bbqing, dips and anything generally unhealthy ;-), Americans know what they are doing.

I just read the thread out of curiosity. Now I crave corn bread! Guess what they say about curiosity is true.  ;D
