heartworm in the uk?
« on: June 25, 2010, 09:01:20 PM »
I am moving to London for 6 months and then off to Continental Europe afterwards with my two small elderly dogs.  I live high in the mountains and my dogs are not on heartworm medication.  Will they need to go on the medication when they get to London?  I know it is retro so I can wait until I get there to find out, just curious if anyone knows.  Is heartworm prevalent there?  Thank you.

Not in the UK, but it is in Southern Europe (not sure about where exactly).

My vet recommended I put my dog on Advocate, which is a flea/tick/worm treatment that handles heartworm, though as bookgrl said, it's not really an issue here. There are some diseases/vaccines here that aren't in the US (lungworm is one I remember, not sure what else), so you'll probably want to check with your vet when your pets gets here.

did you put your dog on advocate? if so how does it compare in price to heartguard etc........im wondering if it would just be best to make arrangements with existing vet to mail over their current heartworm meds.

I didn't put him on Advocate for heartworm, because it isn't a problem here. (Advocate just happens to cover it anyway.) I put him on Advocate for all the other things it covers, including lungworm (which is a problem here).

As for price, I paid my vet about £15 for the prescription, and then got a year's supply for about £50. My vet wanted to charge me £120 for a year's supply through them. I also bought 6 months' supply of Frontline for my cat for about £18.

wow thats much cheaper than here........im amazed at the cost of frontline.......i pay so much for that when i use it..........both hassina and i have older doggy friends and are concerned about the meds they are given.......im happy to hear that heartworm is not really an issue there....thanks for information....steff

My dogs also were put on Advocate when we moved here last year and it does say it takes care of heartworm even though it is not a concern here.

One thing I did need to get my dogs up to date on was leptospirosis vaccinations. My vets were not so concerned with it back in the States but they were concerned with it here. I thought I would mention it in case your dogs were not vaccinated.
