I guess. I don't think that asking your husband is exactly taking a representative sample of native BrE speakers, though.

I'm also a native BrE speaker and I say it the same way - a sort of huffy 'uck' sound when I'm frustrated (or unimpressed by something) and a longer 'ure' (like in the British pronunciation sample) when I'm grossed out. I'm pretty sure that the majority of BrE speakers I know use the same pronunciations and meanings. Obviously that's still a generalisation, but it's definitely not just Legs Akimbo's husband who does it.

There's a couple of pronunciation examples on this site: http://www.forvo.com/word/ugh/.

The first is an American female, who pronounces it: 'ugg'

The second is a British male, who pronounces it: 'ure'

It can also be pronounced like 'uh' or 'uck' in the UK too.

Oh yes that was really helpful.  Now that I know what sound we are talking about, I actually say it both ways.

I think the "ure" way is more akin to disgust and I think of it more like eww but I appreciate that doesn't seem quite right in print either.  Sometimes it is so strange to try and write sounds

It wasn't meant as a dig.  Just like my husband may or may not be representative of BrE speakers, you may not be either.  Chances are, he is at least showing an example of at least how some use it.

I just asked DH how he would pronounce 'ugh' and he looked at me like I was an alien and said "Why on Earth would I ever use that word?".  Anyway, I asked him to pronounce it just for fun and his pronunciation was 'ure' sounding.

I've never heard anyone say UGH with a hard G at the end! Not in any country!! That's so odd. It's like pronouncing 'knitting' with a K at the beginning! As someone (sorry - can't remember who) said, it's more of a sigh, an exhalation, etc., than an actual word.

For S&G's last night I asked DH to pronounce UGH and he said Ugg like I would then second guessed himself and said Ure and then said no that would be wrong.

I explained this thread and he laughed and said just like the car Peugot<sp> he says peRguet and I asked if there was an "R" he said no I dont think so must be a Geordie thing ;-)

LOL! Does he really pronounce an R in Peugeot?? I pronounce it purr-zho, but not with an R in purr. I'm British originally, so "purr" (like a cat's sound) doesn't have a strong R at the end. Does that make sense?

Am I missing the humour in this or am I just being a grouch here?   Is someone actually upset about the word ugh?  I pronounce the hard G in ugh and say it out loud all the time AND say purr-zho with an R.  So what does that make me?  (who cares really?)

Yup. That makes you a grouch with a hard G and an R.  ;) :P

My DH also pronounces it like 'purr-zho'.  It took me ages to figure out what kind of car he was talking about (actually I finally figured it out when he mentioned it while an advert was on and I saw the name of the car).  I always pronounced it (luckily, only to myself) the way it is phonetically spelled.
