I am looking to fly myself and my two kids to NY JFK sometime this summer and the flights are reDONKalously expensive, £660 each! Has anyone got any ideas of how to get cheaper flights? Has anyone seen any? Any advice at all??

TIA!

No I haven't but just wanted to share in your frustration at the prices!  We were checking prices for the possibility that DD might fly back to the US for a few weeks and they are sky high!  My dad is coming over (to the UK from the US) and his ticket is over double what my ticket cost last summer.

I'd be happy to pay £660, we're looking at £850 from MAN to ORD for my daughter, plus £135 Unaccompanied Minor service.  Unfortunately this is the summer season, and they hike the prices.  We're actually taking out a loan to cover it.   :-\\\\

I was playing around with some dates and it looks like if you book something that's at the end of August and crosses over into the first week or so of September, you'll find stuff for about £450-£500.

I saw that you're in Manchester. This a list of all the airlines that fly out of Manchester.  I usually just go through every airline website out of the airport that I'm flying from and see who has the cheapest.  It takes ages, but can be worth it most times.

I bought a ticket on Virgin from Heathrow to Boston for 400 pounds including all taxes/fees for late August, but I'm not sure if the flight is still priced at that rate as I bought it back in February.

I feel your pain!  I've been looking for just a merely expensive ticket to LA at the beginning of August, but all I've found were insane prices so far.   I would love a deal, of course, and I know it would be pricey, but dang.

The tickets do drop nicely right at the end of August though.

I've got tickets for this Tuesday for 8 days from Heathrow to Boston on American for $500.  I booked last month.  My husband booked the same flights on Thursday, and he paid $750.  I use Kayak's US site -- switching country and currency and pay with a US card.  It makes a HUGE difference.  My husband's flight was £1500 on the UK site.  OUCH!

I don't know if you've looked at this site, but I've always found tickets to be cheapest by far on www.statravel.com.

If you're willing to go from Gatwick--and into Newark--you can get very cheap flights on Iceland Express.  You have to stop in Iceland and it really is totally no-frills.  But.  Very cheap.  My BF was here in the beginning of June for £267.  Granted, we booked it awhile ago, but things should still be more reasonable if you're willing to be flexible with your dates.

Thanks everyone! I will be travelling with my 4 year old son and 5 month old daughter, so want to fly directly from MAN to JFK, I live very close to the airport here and my parents live very close to JFK, so we are spoiled! I am also stuck with the school calendar so am flexible but only within a few weeks. I am going to look into everything that everyone has suggested though! Might take a loan from the bank of Mom and Dad!

Thanks everyone!

Just an update: Tickets to NYC seem to have dropped dramatically this week- I found RT non stop LHR to JFK for £550, and got a non stop Virgin flight to Newark for 600- first week of August. When we looked these up 2 weeks ago, they were at least £650.
This may not be all airports since the Philly prices didn't seem to drop much, but NYC ones definitely seemed cheaper!

I just saw one thru American Airlines MAN to LGA for less than £500; like Danielle said, if you're flying to NY you can get a lot of deals.

My daughter is flying unaccompanied so must have a direct MAN-ORD, we're stuck with the high prices unfortunately!

Man to LGA???? Really! I just looked that up and yes, its about £475, now I have to decide if its worth it for me to have a layover full stop as I am travelling on my own with an infant and an almost 5year old!!! Thanks for the heads up!
