Elliejean,
Just noticed your dilemma about the small kitchen and no room for a coffee maker.  Have you thought about trying a Melita?  This little number gets put on top of your mug, with a filter in it of course, you pour the hot water, and it filters through.  It takes up virtually no space . . .  You use a very fine grind of coffee. It makes a really good cup. This way you could go back to having a decent cup during the week, too!

ooh I used to use the disposable version of this, they make pretty good coffee! The one cup filters would be really great for anyone who shares a kitchen or has limited kitchen space but wants a good cup of filter.

Ok this is starting to bug me so I figured I would ask here...
We have a decent coffee maker http://www.marksandspencer.com/Coffee-Maker-Digital-Timer-Grinder/dp/B002DH78AS?_encoding=UTF8&categoryNodeID=43670030&node=59033031&mnSBrand=core&ref=sr_1_2&qid=1282647607&sr=1-2&rh=&page=

I am using ground wawa coffee or store bought ground coffee as I havent used the grinder portion yet.  It does have a permanent filter but every pot of coffee has muck in the bottom...dark brown muck.

Any ideas? Do I need to use real coffee filters?

If you don't like the dark brown muck then you do need a filter.

ETA: I have a coffee maker that has a built in basket & metal mesh filter and I removed the filter part and use paper filters because I like my coffee clean tasting. The metal filter is not as fine as the paper filters so it doesn't catch all the particles of the bean.

But it's just a matter of preference.

I brought a number of these little wonders over with me in the past. Our local supermarket in US was selling sets of a nice mug with the Melitta filter top (in matching colors). I found this helpful as you knew in a flash that the filter top would fit exactly on that mug without precarious wobblings. Bit tricky sometimes to find the right size filter papers.
I've read somewhere that the filter coffee is better for you than the cafetiere jobs -- something about the oil being filtered out??

We have a built in filter in our coffee maker and we don't get brown muck in it. I'd be pretty ticked if this happened! We have this one:

Can anyone recommend a coffee maker equivalent to Mr. Coffee? In a smaller size? I have the little Mr. C. here, which makes 4 cups (well, really 2 mugs) and will of course have to leave it behind  :\\\'( It probably cost me all of $20. Don't want to get a huge machine because DH doesn't drink coffee all that much (and likes it weak). I have the Melitta filters but sometimes you want to do a bit more.

I have this one by Cookworks. Cheap(£14.99) Cheerful and makes good coffee (with a paper filter). Mine makes 10 cups.

I just think the metal filter has too many holes so I will be looking for filters....It doesn't matter what kind of coffee I use.
I have tried the grinding which that may work better since it may not grind as fine as regular store bought coffee.

Thanks wanted to make sure I wasn't loopy

That's a good point. Maybe it's really best used with size grind the machine makes. Glad it can be fixed with some simple filters!

If you are looking for good coffee to brew (better than the supermarket available brands), HasBean has a great supply of single origin (and blends).

For one cup brewing, the aeropress (made by the people who make the Aerobie flying disc) is a lifesaver for me at work.

My friend from Spain uses one of those. Personally, I don't like it. If you like black espresso then it's perfect, but I like milk in my coffee and as soon as I'd add it, it would go cold.  :-\\\\

Oh yeah! I remember when we had a percolator. Pretty messy to clean out though and the brew could get strong. The aroma was what it was all about though -- wafting through the whole house. Then along came "Instant" and my mother threw ours out.  >:(
