Camping!
« on: July 03, 2010, 09:08:40 PM »
My boyfriend and I just got back from Glastonbury this week, and had a seriously great time camping. We want to get back out for some more nature this summer, and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good camping?

I've seen some threads on here before on where to look, but does anyone have a recommendation for places they've actually been? We're looking to go either around Devon and that way, or up North around the Lake District....wherevs really...

Or, any recommendations for nice bed and breakfasts? We just want to be in the middle of nowhere...

Go to Northumberland then!  The Lake District is lovely too, but not during school holidays cos everyone goes to the Lake District!  :)

For remote wildness, Northumberland (so far) is my top pick!  Most sparsely populated county in England & not that many people think to go there on holiday.
Ring the bells that still can ring

That's how the light gets in...

I like camping in Cornwall, preferably very near the sea.

But, no matter what part of the country you go to, the campsite you choose can make all the difference. We always use this website to get good descriptions and reviews of various sites. It's incredibly useful!

Since we don't have children and prefer quiet places, we tend to choose sites without a lot of amenities - i.e., playgrounds, games rooms, etc. We don't need that stuff and it tends to attract families and groups. All we want is a view of the sea, no traffic noise and clean showers.  :)

Thanks for the suggestions!!

Yes, we prefer less chances of children as well. I'll check out that site - any campgrounds in particular that you like?

So this may sound like a hopelessly naive question, but is it legal to just randomly camp in some part of the wilderness, or must you stick to designated campsites and/or get a permit? It's been, well, a few decades since the last time I went camping and mostly what I remember from my family trips in Oregon was just pulling off the side of the road, hiking in a bit, and setting up a tent next to a river. I guess I'd be surprised if that were still an option, but the prospect of sharing a campsite (or having anyone else within at least a mile) doesn't sound even remotely appealing.

This is our favourite one: http://www.penmarlampark.co.uk/

It's in Bodinnick just across the ferry from Fowey in Cornwall.

Thanks! Those sites are helpful and, if nothing else, I now at least know what it's called (wild camping). =)

Let us know how you make out! We've never done that type of camping because we're complete namby-pambies. We like hot showers and I need somewhere to plug my blow-dryer in.  :P
