I've bought a vintage Polaroid camera and some Impossible Project Film, going to get a guestbook with spaces for the polaroids, encourage people to take pictures and then write over them with Sharpies :)

Hijack: I did this for a close friend for her 30th birthday and she still says it's her favourite gift and bit of memorabilia ever. I found a cool handmade book and then sat at the party taking Polaroids of all of her friends and then had the people in the picture write her a birthday wish or note on the page where I taped the photo. It turned out great, and was really special to her. It made sense as well since she always modeled for my photography courses so I was always photographing her anyway.  :) I love stuff like that. I didn't do anything like that for my own wedding because I wanted to relax and not be too consumed by it or anything, and I tend to geek on that sort of thing.  :P

We didn't do anything really quirky, but we had our small wedding at a cool old B & B in Texas that had vintage metal signs hanging in the garden and a white gazebo. Other than that, we chose sand castle tea light holders for our wedding favors since I was moving here by the sea with loads the castles.  ;)

We did that!  I loved it!  It was fun and silly and much more fun and memorable than a plain old guest book.

We also decided against a wedding party and opted to have our parents stand up with us -- possibly my best wedding-related decision.

We had a vaguely vintage-y wedding, so rented a fabulous seafoam green Cadillac with fins to drive to/from the church.

I found a vintage Vogue party dress pattern and found a dressmaker to modify and make it in ivory dupioni -- definitely a one of a kind dress, which was awesome and meant I never tried on one wedding dress in a boutique.  After years of humiliating bridesmaid dress fittings where I'd be forced to squeeze myself into a sample size dress, I straight up refused to have anything about my wedding make me feel bad.

I went to a wedding once where they handed out disposable cameras to the guests and had them take photos of whatever and then drop them in a box on the way out. They had the photos developed and some of them were really great!

My parents did this with their wedding. Unfortunately, I think they still have a box of un-developed disposable cameras 18 years later. ;) I think it's a cool idea, though.

That seems like something that used to happen a lot at weddings, but now that everyone has digital cameras ... not so much. It's pretty normal now for people to just send their digital pics to the happy couple.

My favourite wedding thing was when my friend did a pub quiz at her wedding reception. It was awesome!  ;D

My ex and I did this at our wedding 10 years ago.  I could list so many unique things about that wedding, but not much unique about my wedding with my now hubby!  We are going to do a second informal ceremony when we can afford it--that one will be unique and more spiritual.

We took all our guests to the theater the night before the wedding. Saw a lovely musical that was family-friendly and people were talking about it all weekend. Lots of fun!

It seems that having a plain ole 'write your name inside' guestbook is an old idea. I like the idea of having pictures and a note from friends and family inside it. I mean, I'm almost sure my parents don't even have their guestbook anymore. At least I haven't ever seen it.

Thanks for all the ideas! I like hearing about some of the fun things everyone has put into their weddings. :)

We used a plain old guestbook, and I really loved it! I toyed with some other ideas I'd read about - one person used blank cards like recipe cards in a box - but I'm sort of glad we have everyone's messages in one place in our book, to be honest.

The day after the wedding, we had a big barbecue on the beach for everyone who was still around. There were probably still about 50 of us and it was great!

We also did glass bowls of retro-style sweets - sherbet dips, parma violets, etc.

I sourced both the glass bowls and the jugs we used for flowers from car boot sales. I like vintage-y looking stuff.

Ah, our friends did this at their wedding, too - it was really cheap to get all the sweets from Costco. Only problem is, they're STILL eating those sweets two years later! They also had a bouncy castle in the courtyard, which was way too much fun. :)

We're knee-deep in wedding planning right now so this thread is great!

Ours all got eaten! Obviously our guests were greedier than your friends'!  ;)

I got the sweets from A Quarter Of. Great site!

Ha, possibly! But I think it was more that they let the groom and my fiance loose in the candy aisle of Costco. Any female there would've restrained them from buying utterly ridiculous quantities (several tubs of each candy?? omg)!

I ran across a website that suggested instead of having the classic flower centerpieces, to display your favors as the centerpieces! I'm going to use this idea, as my favors are bookmarks. My idea is to do a glass bowl with the bookmarks in it, but after reading all the posts about candy, I might put some salt water taffy in the bowls too!

I love the idea of bookmarks!

Another friend of mine did potted herbs as her centerpieces/favours. They were lovely.

The bookmarks sound unique in their own rights.  Are you both bibliophiles?  Maybe some kind of book-centric centerpiece like a small pile of books (each table with a specific author / series), with bookmarks sticking out topped with a candle?

My sister's an artist and BIL's an architect so my sister (much to her regret for doing all this by hand herself) bought egg shaped wood pieces from JoAnn Fabrics, cut out a "thumb" area to make paint pallets, put drops of paint around the edges, then took litte pies of paper and had them rolled up to look like blueprints (one edge had their names & wedding date printed on them) as wedding favours.  They're great and I still have mine, but man they were a pain in the butt to make for 200+ guests!  She also did 5 chocolate drops in netting for each guest.

My brother & SIL had mini picture frames with their names & wedding date written on them as their favours.  They placed them on a table when you walked into the reception and they had everyone's name in them and their table number.  Then, on the tables instead of decorating them they had scattered photos of each of them over the years - from infacy to present and then covered them with glass in the centre, where they had a candle sitting in the middle.

Some friends of ours (DH & I met working at an amusement park) were real ACE enthusiasts and so they named each of their tables after their favourite roller coasters and had photos of the coasters on the tables, and then had personalised crossword puzzles and word searches for guests to play with.

For our wedding we were a Tatty Bear theme: we ordered Tatty Bear Invitations, Tatty Bear Cake topper and then we ordered Special Tatty Bear fridge magnets with our names and wedding date on them.  Consequently my cousin became obsessed with them.   ;D
