can I bring jam into UK?
« on: July 05, 2010, 02:25:37 AM »
Just picked up some of my favorite boysenberry jam from Publix yesterday here in Georgia.

Do you know if I can bring it back in my packed bags?

Do I declare it when I arrive in the UK?

I've never brought any kind of food and my husband has be paranoid.

Thanks :)

I brought 8 jars of Pomegranate Jelly that my cousin made last year and 10 jars the year before and had no problems at all.

I've been taking food back and forth between the US and UK for years... there are some restrictions (such as meat, dairy and certain plants), but jam is fine.

The show Nothing to Declare had me worried about taking food stuff in and out of the country. So when I traveled back to Texas last year, I declared all my biscuits and chocolates from the UK. The customs officials laughed and rolled their eyes.

But, if I was taking them into New Zealand or Australia and didn't declare them it would be a huge fine!

Wow, the 2 k of raw produce is surprising.  If and when we go, I may have to bring back some Concord grapes (nom nom nom), jicama, and a bunch of other things I find hard to get here.  The seed thing is cool too!  I can grow my own.

The only thing I ever declared was on my last visit to the US was a large bottle of 15 year old Glenfiddich Scotch, only because it was worth more than $50 USD. No duty was paid and they actually thanked me for declaring it.

Things only need to be decalred if they are on the list of items that must be declared and remember that not all countries rules are the same. NZ & Aus have the tightest customs rules because they have isolated ecosystems and the introduction of outside contaminants could be devastating to them.

The only thing I've ever declared is the apple and banana I had in my bag (and that was only because the inspector doggy sniffed out my backpack while we were waiting for our luggage).  They confinscated them . :(
