DateBritishGuys.com

My lovely friend sent me this NY Times article : http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/17/fashion/17BritParty.html?_r=2]http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/17/fashion/17BritParty.html?_r=2] http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/17/fashion/17BritParty.html?_r=2

Its all about a new US-based dating website for American women to meet British men. www.datebritishguys.com is I guess a real dating site, but their articles are hilarious, if a little bit gag-worthy:

• Article tutoring how to get Brit men to buy you dinner (the £ is stronger than the $)
• How to act on a date with a British man -Don't let him know you don't eat meat (Brits HATE vegetarians)
• How American women "work out all the time to look their best" (unlike frumpy english women, obviously)
• How american women are money grabbers
• How British men are low maintenance & less prissy than Americans(Umm... they need to meet my husband Mr. My-Hair-Needs-2-Hours-to-Dry)
• Go for a Brunch date so you don't drink alcohol & make bad decisions (I can't be the ONLY person that goes to brunch just for Mimosas!)
• "British Men Have Been Raised With Royalty, And Treat Women Like Princesses" and have impeccable etiquette that is inborn (HAhahahahahahhahahahahahah. I don't think my husband knows there are places that set more than one fork on the table!)

Just thought some of you High-Maintenance-Beer-Pong-Playing-Soccer-Mom-American-Women who only married their British husbands because they are royalty and have an accent might enjoy reading this.

Also, wouldn't it look weird on a visa app? Like you wanted to marry your husband just because you wanted to move to the UK?

Oh dear... these people need to watch an episode of Little Britain or East Enders!
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

I have recently come back from my travels to the States and Canada, there seemed to be a trend going just now, I have chatted to quite a few women as you do when you open your mouth and the British accent comes out, there seemed to be a greater desire to move to the UK due to a perceived higher standard of living and especially the National Health Service.

I found that view point interesting, not that I am tempted to stay in the USA, I actually like it here in the UK, I do visit the USA for the scenery and historical locations.

I wonder if you ladies think that is the case compared to the USA ? as per quality of life issues ?

Welcome to DateBritishGuys.com – the premiere source for American based chicks (any nationality is ok!) and British chaps (100% British Beef Only!). This is a brand new dating website targeted towards British guys, and women who love their accent.

Reminds me of that iloveyouraccent.com dating site.

Canada do I know, I think it was a matter of preferences, history as they said is one of the major draw as well as a milder if changeable climate.

The weather issue may be true for the area of Canada you've been to, but there are parts of BC that are pretty similar.   ;) It's a big country with lots of variety (and history as well)!  :)

That article is priceless!

I have to say, when I brought my Brummie boyfriend (yeah, his accent is grreeeaaattt  ::) ) to the small town I'm from in the Northwest, he certainly was treated like royalty!

Whenever he'd open his mouth, servers, waitresses, bar tenders, who ever, would drop their jaws with glee and giggle themselves silly as if Hugh Grant himself had just shown up. Women would hit on him while I would be standing RIGHT next to him!

I love that dating website - "British beef only" - oh man...

I really don't see it as funny in the way they wanted it to be funny.  The stereotypes about both the British and Americans are really cringe worthy.

As for people being interested in moving to the UK, I doubt it's a new thing.  Americans generally have positive views towards British people (or at least the English, but I think it extends to every country and region in the UK).  There's been studies on reactions based on perceived Britishness.  That's why I think all this "Anti-British" stuff that the media here has been up in arms about is pretty much invented by the media themselves.

What I find is odd is that there's always much to be made of American women being attracted to British guys, but rarely do you hear people go on about British men being attracted to American women.  It must be the case.  I wonder how many marriages between Americans and British people are where the American is the woman?  We don't know for sure if our site is representative.  Are women more likely to immigrate to their husband's country of birth?  That sort of stuff is interesting to me.  The unfunny copy on that cheesy dating site doesn't, and it seems it can only lead to bad "Daily Mail" stories.

Oh, the fickle ways of New World women! Just a few years ago, America's ladies had dubbed the British male a dating pariah.

Sure, there were still a few who — on hearing a “quaint” English accent — would find the pheromones flowed. But Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Heather Graham were all busy bashing our boys, unimpressed by their snaggle-toothed smiles and emotional “illiteracy”.

Really?.........Really?

We went to Outback Steakhouse when DH was visiting me in the US.  The waitress commented on his accent, starting smiling a lot, bent down on the table to show off her chest, etc.  She asked him where he was from and I grabbed his ring finger and held it up and said "From the land of 'I'm Married'".

If people honestly want to date British guys for those reasons, I think they'll be in for a shock.

Totally agree!  And I find these people's exploitation of their marriage pretty disgusting, to be honest.

It's been mentioned several times before on this forum, but it's still true: after a while, you don't hear the accent anymore.  I do believe that coming from different countries is one of the things that drew DH and me together, but that initial attraction isn't enough to sustain a marriage.

God. The article tells how the website creators met. Not only does it sound sickly sweet but ends as "They smiled at each other adoringly." and the male saying “I am on a mission to pass on the love my wife and I have to the rest of the world.”.

My gag reflex is kicking in.
