Gardening
« on: July 07, 2010, 05:39:44 PM »
I never liked gardening before.  I just never liked getting outside in the heat very much or getting my hands dirty.  But, I decided this year to give it a try.  Things grow really well here and I am quite happy with my first time efforts.

Lisa,
Are you growing any food?
I've grown some tomatoes that are just starting to ripen. They didn't get very big but for the very first time, I'm pleased. Next year I will also do some lettace and cucumbers.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and for taking the time to look.   :)

Lisa, your flowers look gorgeous. Ours did fantastic this year, also. Think the cold winter really helped them. We also have some cherry tomatoes and peas - decided not to have regular tomatoes, nor potatoes this year - since we had them coming out of our ears last year...had to give a lot away (especially the tomatoes). :o

Yesterday I volunteered to go out to a farm and picked peaches starting at 6:30 am and we were through at 9 am which was good considering the heat. I'm guessing there were about 100 people showed up to volunteer. The peaches go to a local cannery, also charity run, and they are distributed later to families in need. Put another way all the tons of peaches can't be bought in grocery stores. It was a huge farm and it was very professionally run. My first time to do this.
A note on families in need. They may just be middle class families who have a temporary need. They also can be assessed as to any other needs they may have. In return they are supposed to contribute back when they get things back together financially also they do work projects as they are able. Sounds good to me. We all know some people know how to work the system were there is something to be had for nothing so I like that there are checks and balances.

This year was a bumper crop.

When I left home my DW gave me orders, no climbing ladders and don't bring any peaches home.
