San Francisco to Inverness
« on: July 14, 2010, 09:04:52 PM »
Heya,

My name is Jennifer and on 4 August I'm flying from SFO to LHR and thence a train to Inverness.  I met my BF online and last October, after travelling back and forth a few times, when my job was going nowhere faster than usual and my landlord had to sell the property, I said, "screw it!" got rid of most things, put the rest in storage, and by November I was taking full advantage of the "6 month general tourist visa" and living in Scotland. Border Control said it was "unusual" (I suggested "crazy").

Things went surprisingly well so I applied to and was accepted by the local college (studying computing), returned to California to deal with everything and yesterday I got my shiny new visa in the mail and in three weeks I get to go back. As you might imagine, I'm very excited.

I have friends scattered across England and Ireland (also met online through various forums over the last 15 years) but none in Scotland. I was only just starting to meet people when I left (it's particularly difficult to meet people when you don't have a job or go to school). But friends will come in time and I know not to tell anyone to "move your fanny" and at least half the time I manage to say "trousers" on the first try and that light switches are upside-down (and sometimes on the other side of the door) and that doors don't open the direction I think they will and to really _think_ before crossing the street.

Welcome to UKY! I lived in the East Bay (Rockridge) before moving to the UK in 2007.

I'm originally from the South Bay (Los Gatos), went to school in the East Bay (Moraga), and eventually settled in Alameda, working in Emeryville. I tell Brits that I'm from "San Francisco" and they tell me about their friend/cousin/former-babysitter's-nephew who lives in the Mission and I smile and nod :o)

Welcome to UKY!  I've been up here in Scotland on a student visa for the past 11 months.  If your experience will be anything like mine, you'll make loads of friends once you get started on your course.  :)

I've not been to Inverness yet, but it's on the list.

Yeah I get that alot too. I lived in Nor Cali all my life (near Redding) and then moved to Berkeley for 3 months and then moved to quiet Rockridge for 8 months before leaving for Derby. I worked in Downtown Oakland (social services) @ 19th & San Pablo. I miss taking BART everywhere but I love life here...hope you settle in and best of luck in your endeavours!

If you happen into Rockridge before you leave, have a coffee at Peaberry's for me and a burger at Christophers  ;) :P

I use to work with the Mayor of Emeryville before he became the Mayor.

I live in Inverness too (I'm the Brit, my husband is from the US) and he has found it easy to make friends in Inverness.  Good luck with everything!

So you know the Rheem Shopping Center?

Come to think of it we also had our wedding reception in Moraga.

Vaguelly. I didn't have a car but I'd sometimes go there with friends, to Nations or whatnot.

:)  I had some friends who went to St Mary's and I know one of the professors.

I lived in Oakland for a couple years and worked in Lafayette.  I did the tunnel commute in the mornings when I was in a hurry, but preferred that lovely meandering drive (via Moraga) over the hills in the evenings.
