pumpkin
« on: July 15, 2010, 09:25:15 PM »
I found an old thread saying that Waitrose had tinned pumpkin, but mine doesn't seem to carry it.

I've searched Tesco (result for danish crackers???) Sainsbury's and Asda but no luck either. Does anyone know where I can get tinned pumpkin? I really want a pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

Thanks!

I have definitely found it at Waitrose, but I think it's seasonal.  You could try using a fresh butternut squash, it tastes basically the same and I saw those at Waitrose quite recently.

I believe there is currently a tinned pumpkin shortage because last summer a lot of the libby's crop was wiped out.  So it may get better in the fall.

You can also order it online in the UK

In the meanwhile, I agree with historyenne, butternut squash is a great substitue.

Some Waitrose stores have it year round, mine only has it from October to December.

I assume it is a sop to the local Americans.   ;)

You can get it at Whole Foods in London.

You'll find fresh pumpkins in the shops when they're in season.

And you can grow your own fresh ones, even in pots on balconies...

I may have to try butternut squash cause I need my pie now, but it sounds wrong, butternut squash pie.... Would you just use it as a direct substitute for pumpkin?

If you substitute butternut squash it's like using sweet potato to make it.  It really isn't pumpkin pie IMO.  They are all great tasting, but not quite like each other.  That said I love sweet potato pie almost more than pumpkin!

seriously, you guys are awesome!

I mentioned to my mother that the baby wanted pumpkin pie and her response was simply 'the baby doesn't need pumpkin pie' I think it's been too long since she was pregnant to remember cravings...

LOL! My father in law said there were some coming up in his friend's allottment that may be coming my way soon (fresh ones, obviously... lol) so you might be able to find a fresh one somewhere pretty soon.  ??? I think last year, I got one from him in September. It was a nice big one, so I roasted it and pureed it and got about 8 cups of fresh pumpkin puree which I kept in the freezer and baked all sorts of stuff with.  :)

I think I heard that Ocado sells it online too.  I so get the pregnancy craving thing though.  I think butternut squash comes pretty close to fresh pumpkin--won't taste the same as tinned pumpkin, but neither does fresh pumpkin :)

I get mine from a local department store that has a food section with a small American corner.  I don't like lots of the junk they sell there, but go every now and again for pumpkin, A&W, and butter-rum life savers---oh, and there's another international deli where I can get butterfingers and baby ruths.  :D

That sounds like something my mother would say. Reason #76 why I live in another country!
