Cat Food
« on: July 21, 2010, 01:25:20 PM »
Hiya,

I sort of lucked into my cat when he was born. I had gotten his mother from the pound a few years prior and everytime we went to take her to the vet to get fixed she'd escape the house and get pregnant (!) One of these pregnancies resulted in Tegan. He was my cat from day 1. He'd only cuddle in my arms, he'd only let me play with him, etc. When he was 1 I moved away to University but he'd still sleep outside my room when I wasn't there, cuddly my dirty clothes (lol) and wait for my return. I knew when I moved to the UK he *must* come with me because my mother absolutely despises him.

But, since I was at uni, I never fed/took care of him. Once we got to the UK my husband just picked up some food to bring to the airport (I only brought a small amount of the food he was getting in the US - and it was NOT good food! all grains, etc) and I didn't have the time/energy to do a proper hunt for "good" food and just bought something in Morrisons and have been buying the same thing since.

Life has settled down now, though, and I feel like I'm in a position to be able to properly research food and buy him something far better than what he has. He has no qualms about changing his cat food - infact my mother changed it constantly, I think. And I've changed the wet food he gets as a treat a few times and his hard treats and he just doesn't care. So, anything I buy he'll most likely eat.

But the problem is I can't find any good UK websites on what I should look for in food. I'm at a huge loss and I just want to do right by my kitty! His fourth birthday is in August and he's nearly out (probably another 2-3 weeks of food left) of his old food and I want to change it to something better before then.

Links? Suggestions? Ideas?

(If all else fails I can go talk to the vet but I'd rather not.)

Iams, Purina, Hill's, Royal Canin - these are all quality brands in the US that you can find in the UK! I personally feed my cat Hill's (though they are on weight reduction diets) and they love it.

Our cats eat Hills wet and dry food (they get the prescription stuff, which in the UK doesn't require a vet Rx).  Our little cat also gets Applaws wet food in the chicken varieties.

Iams is actually what he's getting now! But I feel like I should be doing better for him :) it might just be the guilt that I didn't take care of him for 3 years though.

I keep seeing Hills recommended on this forum so I think that's definitely on my list of ones to consider. I toyed with the idea of a raw diet for a while but he won't eat raw meat! (..he will eat cooked meat, though. go figure.)

My cat gets the Hills Prescription stuff too. You can buy it (and all other premium brands) online from places like Pet Planet. Or if you have a Pets at Home shop near you, they've got lots of good catfood as well. Failing that, try your vet. Mine sells Hills, but other vets sell other brands and they're generally very good ones. Even our garden centre sells Hills!

Both Hilife and Encore are foods with higher meat content/low-no grain content and you can usually find them in a mid or bigger sized Sainsbury's.  I think Hilife varies in their meat/fish content, so read the label.

My cat loves the Encore kibble, but they stopped selling it around here.

Maxwell has to have the Hill's CD food -- dry and tinned -- because of urinary problems.  He seems to like it and (touch wood) has been healthy ever since he started on it.  I'm told the Hill's brand is available in the UK.

He used to love Whiskas, so don't know if that was what brought on his problem.
