Artichokes
« on: July 21, 2010, 10:52:11 PM »
I'll just start by saying that I'm from California and love a good artichoke! I have been living in York for a year now and have had such a hard time finding fresh artichokes. The only thing that I have found to get me by are artichoke hearts in a can. I have tried Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's, and a few independent green grocers with no luck. Does anyone have any idea where I can get my fresh artichoke fix in York? Suggestions appreciated.

Have you tried farm shops or farmers' markets? I don't know if they would definitely have artichokes, but it's worth a try!

Oh, I just checked and Riverford Organics has them but it's not right in York. Still, if you fancy a day out that way, you could pick some up.

My greengrocer always has some artichokes in stock, they are always quite exensive. But I love the artichokes in tins to make my trademark artichoke dip!!

I do that one too! There's so much other stuff in my artichoke dip that it would be a waste to use fresh ones in it. But I do like a lovely fresh artichoke dipped in melted butter. Swooooon!  :)

I have yet to find artichokes in a tin.  I've found marinated ones in jars, but I really need the tinned ones.  I've checked Waitrose in Kenilworth and Tescos in Warwick with no success.  What is the brand name of the tinned artichokes here?

I agree!  There's nothing better than a fresh California artichoke.  My son and his wife live in Palo Alto.  My son used to bring fresh ones when he visited me in the US.  Sigh!

Both my local Tesco's and Morrison's have their own brand tinned artichoke hearts in water.

Artichokes are my favorite, and I had the same problem when I moved here. At first I could only find them at Harrods for an absurd amount of money! But since then I've seen them at Waitrose, as well as a few vegetable stands. Although, I'm here in London so I don't know about York!

You can get tinned ones in Tesco, if it's not been mentioned yet!

Waitrose does, indeed, sell there own brand of tinned artichokes.  I found some there today, but it's the first time I've seen them on the shelf.  Now to taste them....
