Decent brands of flat irons and hair dryers?
« on: July 24, 2010, 10:10:31 AM »
I have long thick hair that I have to straighted daily and I've been trying to look at different brands and figure out what I need/want. I really really don't want to wait until I get there because I just may scare some people with my crazy hair! lol Plus Im going to be staying in Iceland for 2 days before I get to London so I'm going to need to wash my hair before I land. :) So I'd like to at least purchase a flat iron before I leave in September... Can you please reccomend some name brands of some good flat irons and hair dryers? I don't need our equivalt to CHI but I don't mind spending money on good products. My flat iron now is a 2" Jilbere de paris that I spent $80 on and it gets more than hot enough! Thanks!

I don't know the model number, but I have a Remington that works really well on my thick curly hair.  It heats up in about 1 minute and has different heat settings, the lowest is 190 C which works well for most of my hair but it also has 200 and 210 which I sometimes use on the top of my hair to get it really straight.  I think it also has 220, but I never use that one.

I don't use a flat iron, but GHD is generally thought of as the best in the business.

GHDs are amazing. I have a hedkandi one which is a GHD-alike, very similar, but not quite as good, was about £30 rather than £100 though.
It's worth watching ASOS as they often have voucher codes and sales on GHDs and you cn get them for as little as £60.

Oh you're in the US, get GHDs, but make sure you get the latest ones as they're dual voltage. A lot of the cheaper brands wont work in the UK so check before you buy.

GHDs are very highly regarded and they are indeed nice.  If you're in the US, Sephora sells them now.

I use this myself: http://www.babyliss.co.uk/straighteners_2088Cu.html.  I ordered it online from John Lewis for £30 or so, but I later saw they were selling it for £80 in the store (!).  It gets really hot (230 degrees C) and I really like it.  It's quite pretty now, too -- it's blue now and comes in a nice case.  Last year I bought an earlier model of the same straightener from Argos and it was sort of a burgundy color.  (The only reason I replaced it is because it got stepped on and broke.)

I have a travel set GHD straightener and blow drier, they are awesome and came together in a pretty purple case. The straightener is small, but great for me since I have fine hair and it's fairly short, so it's all I need (though I'm trying not to use it for a while since my hair was getting pretty fried from near every day use).

Warning...Hair Straightners from the states my fry your hair here in the UK as my best friend said don't bring one and I started asking around and at least 3 people I knew had their hair fried b/c the voltage is different.
Honestly I would buy one when you get here so the plug will match and it will be made for here. May cost a bit more but might save your hair ;-)

Aww man, that's depressing! I spent a pretty penny on my CHI. I was just intending on using it with an adapter. I guess I'll give it to my sister and spring for a GHD then. Bummer. Found a couple of sites with them for a fair bit cheaper than the official GHD styler site has them. But apparently there are a lot of fakes out there. I wish there was an idiot-proof way to get them cheap without wondering if it's real or not!

I got a chi for Xmas and i was sooo bummed when i learned that it wont work in the uk. I need a straightener that has low settings. I have fine hair and it straightens easily but too hot and I'll fry it.

The GHD is recommended highly, from what I've seen elsewhere, but I don't straighten my hair often enough to really warrant the price--if I did, that would be the one I'd go with.  From what I've heard it's dual voltage (and actually works in that respect), so if you plan to travel back and forth it would be especially useful.

I'm worried about finding a decent three-barrel curling iron.  I know it's not the most commonly used tool here in the US, so I have no clue what the market is going to be like for them in England.  I know the one I have here at home would just immediately set a fire if it got within three feet of a UK outlet, so I'm not even going to try it.

I second GHD's I have two sets of them...tiny and medium width..

also the ones I have you take the screw out of the UK plug and you will find a USA plug on the inside...I didn't know this until after my trip to the USA and didn't take them!

I've blow out more hair straighteners than I can count by trying to use them with various plug and voltage converters. Nothing worked.

Good news is, I found a CHI straightener at Sally's Beauty Supply for like £35. I don't think CHIs are very popular here, so it's easier to get a good deal.
Only downside is they are pink. :P

Add one more.   :-\\\\  The first time I came over 15 years ago, I didn't think much (uh, at all?) and just plugged my big fat curling iron into a little adapter and went about my business.  It was fine at first, but a few minutes in, I noticed a weird smell.  And then I realized that I'd just fried off a big clump of hair.  Oops.
