I had this same dilemma a couple of weeks ago. I wanted wellies, because I thought that I could wear them at the nursery where I work. I however, have calves that are too big to fit into wellies. I just found some water proof trousers and jacket from a shop called Millets, and with the waterproof shoes I already have. I'm sorted. Quite sad that I can't have wellies, though, because they're always so cute. But, we don't really live in the proper country side, so, I don't think wellies would work too well for me.

I have this problem too! So I bought short Hunter Festival Wellies! They don't go up as high so they work perfectly for those of us with big calves.

You can always buy a pair when you get to England if you think you need them, so I wouldn't waste packing space on bringing some from the US. They're not very expensive and you can find a lot of cute ones!

This.  They're everywhere!  Don't waste the packing space.

I too have the big calves issue, so I found ones that were shorter than normal wellies at some shoe shop.  I'll have to check out the Hunter ones though Chary.

I got some welllies before I moved here - Target always has cute ones.

For dog walks in the country and visiting the seaside in the cold months, I have found they are a must for me.

I was just told we're going to a music festival in Cumbria in September, so I will definitely be needing Wellies.  ;D But, I'm going to wait until I get there to buy them.

Boy still says I don't need them, but I think he's just trying to limit my shoes.  :P

I have a pair of red plaid plastic doc martins that are waterproof and have good tread so they work in the snow, too.

Sara, i too really wanted wellies but i think im going to go for ugg boots instead. They're a little more practical for walking around and they're actually cheaper in the uk than they are in the us! Lol

But it rains here! Wet Uggs don't seem very nice to me, but many a person here would beg to differ.

I've lived here for over  years and have never used or needed wellies.

It rains often in the UK, but I haven't experience the torrential downpours that  you get in the northeastern US. It's usually just a light drizzle here.

When it snowed this winter,  there were wellies in all the shops and lots of people were wearing wellies, but it wasn't necessary.  The snow was not that deep - nothing like the snowbanks several feet high that you would get during a northeastern US snowstorm.

I think people here just wear wellies when everyone else is wearing them. It's the same with shorts, for example - it never really gets hot enough that you would be suffering if you weren't wearing shorts (like it would get in some parts of the US), so people wear shorts when it's trendy.

The weather just isn't as extreme here in the UK than in parts of the US. I think people here dress more for fashion than for comfort. In fact, DH thinks I'm weird for listening to the weather before planning what to wear. We also have a friend who wears shorts 365 days a year.

I'm in agreement about the Uggs for rainy weather.  They get soaked through, and not only will it ruin your Uggs but then you'll have wet feet.  The boy hates hates hates Uggs, cause he says they make a squishy sound when the girls in his office walk around in them.

Hmmm well that's lame. I know they have water proofing available & ppl I know that have them say that as long as u don't step all the way into water they should be fine. But perhaps not enough for uk coverage. Even though theyre made to combat against snow :/ well back to square one.

I have these Uggs.  I love them.  The lower "shoe" portion is leather and the upper is suede.  I waterproofed the bottom and my feet stay toasty and dry.  The sole is also pretty rugged -- much more than the flat ones, so that's a plus, too.  They're still not as practical for serious mud and wet as wellies, but they're nice as warm winter boots that can withstand rain and snow.  As an extra bonus, they don't look everyone else's Uggs.

 ;D

I have no idea how people wear the other all-suede Uggs in and out of the rain.  When I see folks in them, they look completely sodden.

I don't wear wellies because of the rain. I wear them because of the mud that is caused by the rain. I take it you're not a festival-goer, sweetpeach?  ;)
