Seasonal eating
« on: July 27, 2010, 11:04:10 AM »
Seasonal eating is something that's really important to me, and I've found a really great resource: Eat the Seasons. They tell you what's in season and give you great recipe ideas too. So if you get your fruit and veg from a box scheme or if, like me, you shop at farm shops and farmers' markets, you'll like this! Besides the occasional craving for a mango, I don't really see a reason to be eating cabbage in August or broad beans in January. Eat what's local and what's in season! It's better for you, for the environment and for your local economy!

(off my soapbox now)

Yeap- getting a local veg box has really helped me eat the seasons- So right now I get the goregous summer veggies and when its cold the cabbage and potatoes and turnips and celeriacs are just right  :)
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Abel and Cole have a cookbook that I checked out from the library with seasonal recipes that sort of follow their organic veg boxes.   It's come in really handy when I get things like Broad Beans which I hadn't ever cooked before.

I love love love the fresh fruit and veg here - It must all have had to be frozen to get to Texas because everything seems to taste better here (strawberries, green beans, nectarines, carrots especially)

Thanks for the link!

I also have used this site for seasonal recipe ideas: http://vegbox-recipes.co.uk/
It's not as pretty as eat the seasons though!

Kind of off topic here, but my FIL just gave me a spring cabbage from his garden not too long ago, so I assume some cabbage is in season?  ??? Just wondering!  :P

Yep - got a Savoy cabbage in my box this week.  I made a beef and cabbage pie from the able & cole cookbook with it.
