Lol, it's funny how people's tastes can differ, I think some of the things you've posted are absolutely gorgeous and totally fashion forward, I think older people often don't understand young fashions, if you have the looks and confidence, things like harem pants can look amazing, even as a plus size brit, it's important to me to look, fun, cute and fashionable and not, for instance have a hair style from 1982 - the year before I was born! To each their own!  ;D

While I don't deny that many of the things in your blog are rather ugly, the UK certainly doesn't corner the market on ugly.

Examples:

from Lerner/NY&Company

From Lands End:

And don't forget the classic "mom jeans" look from America:

A lot of stuff in the fall collections this year are really nice.  Lots of nice coats and trouser silhouettes especially.  If you only cherry pick the ugly things and ignore the nice stuff then of course it's all going to look bad.   ;D

I agree with cheesebiscuit, and I was in uni the year she was born.

I think a lot of those items are cute, and would look good on someone who had the figure for it.

Some of those clothes wouldn't look good on me - like the "Edith Bunker frock" - for example, but that's because I'm short with big boobs and I would look pregnant. not because there's something wrong with the dress.  It would probably look great on a tall, skinny woman with a small bust and long legs.

I've seen tall, thin women in harem pants and they look amazing.

And as hatsumomo said, there is a lot more choice than just those few items.

To smocha, where did you get the photos for your blog? Have you gone to any of the websites for major UK clothing shops and looked at what they were actually selling?

Exactly, I can carry off floral or ditsy or retro prints, I team them with modern accessories and can look fab. I'm quite tall though and in proportion although plus size, with toned arms/legs. There's lots of things which look rubbish on me though, like anything with too much fabric. To each their own!

The Red shoes with the hidden platform are gorgeous, I would wear them. I think that implying something about climbing your way up a corporate ladder or that you look like a hooker because of your  choice of shoes is one of those women dogging on other women statements that are a pet hate of mine. As far as I'm concerned it's one of those negative anti-feminist statements that I would like to see women everywhere stop expressing to each other and start celebrating that as modern women we can dress however we please without slights upon our character.

It's probably one of the reasons why, whereas I love fashion, I don't read the "celebrity fashion disasters" blogs. I'm not into the hating :)

I love the red shoes, too.

I also like the Lerner cargo shorts worn with the platform shoes. They make that model's legs look fabulous.

One of the things that I really like about the UK is that it seems that women have more freedom to dress sexy and show off their bodies without being accused of being stupid, unprofessional, sleeping their way to the top, etc. It's nice to be able to wear something tight or low cut or to wear high heels because you are happy with your body without your intelligence or your morals being questioned.

I have yet to see this, but perhaps it is because I never see them on tall thin women. I personally think harem pants are look terrible on people but now having said, that perhaps I'll see some pulling the look off.

You know what it is funny, I really dislike a vast majority of the outfits I see the women wearing in the uni town I live in but when I walk through the shops I see many, many cute things.  It is baffling, so many cute things being sold, so many terrible outfits being worn, how does that happen?  I can't speak for the rest of the UK, studying too much to get out, but overall the fashion here is terrible, in my opinion.

I am with the people who are the harem pants haters.  Honestly, I couldn't see a thing on that list that I thought was cute or flattering, although some might be wearable if they lost the appliqué.  And I agree that the penis trousers are...pretty bad.  I don't think any of them would be considered classics (although the red shoes on second thought aren't that bad if you're into that sort of thing).  I think every single one of these things would be one of the things they picked on about the "teenies" in the future if any of them became popular.

That said, I don't think it's a British thing.  I think you can find horrible fashion anywhere, from the people who keep up with the latest trends to those who buy their clothes at Primark or Target.

I haven't really found many clothes that flatter my body type here.  For instance, when I go shirt shopping, every single shirt either 1) has a garish appliqué 2)has no sleeves 3) is too short in the front 4)if it has sleeves, it has cap sleeves 5)is a colour I could never pull off.  I need sleeves to cover my upper arms and cap sleeves are usually too short or have the added bonus of making me look like a line backer with a puddle of bat wings spilling out the bottom of the sleeve.  Gross.  Then there's the short or asymmetrical shirts that show off my belly.  And, no, I don't want a glitter appliqué of a butterfly or words of some sort.

I am really picky about new clothes.  I will wear something old and in tatters before I buy something new that I hate.  I had as much trouble in the States though, just usually different points.  For instance, short shirts seem universal, but instead of glittery stuff, usually half the fat girls clothes were in day glow green or orange.

I agree with goods.  I see so many cute things and so many girls wearing the ugly things.  Maybe it's because the ugly stuff is more "unique" or attention getting?  But regardless, fashion is one of those things that everyone is going to feel differently about.

I, for one, think the leggings that look like jeans are not flattering on anyone.  They look cheap and often fit strangely on people.  Jeans look good on everyone, just buy jeans!  :)

Ha ha - I thought the shoes on the link were kinda cute!  Not something I could pull off - mostly because I don't do high heels anymore!

I do *love* my US-style 'Mom jeans' though - didn't know they were called that though.  Lol!  (Also my white trainers. ;))

I got a few nice things recently in Evans, of all places!  (often dire, hit or miss, I know)

I thought this would look horrible on me, but surprisingly it looked good:

Also this:  http://www.evans.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=160&viewAllFlag=false&catalogId=33054&storeId=12553&categoryId=209517&parent_category_rn=209441&productId=1832065&langId=-1

And this:  http://www.evans.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33054&storeId=12553&categoryId=209520&parent_category_rn=209518&productId=1766945&langId=-1

And some other stuff!  :)

I think my personal style and "look" is just drastically different than what's available in most high street shops and I haven't figured out (or can't afford) boutique-ier places.  But it's only fair to point out that I gravitate to a few specific stores/brands in the US, too.

While I think there are (IMO!) definitely awful clothes out there everywhere, it's much more about finding that needle in a haystack -- the flattering clothes that suit one's figure and personality.

I agree with goods.  I see so many cute things and so many girls wearing the ugly things.

I think part of the problem is that what looks good on a hanger or on a tall, skinny model doesn't necessarily look good on you.

I think women - particularly younger women who haven't found a personal style yet - often buy clothing because it looks good in an advertisement  or because their friends, who look nothing like them, look good in it. That's why the clothing looks ugly on them.

There are clothes that I think look adorable when I see them in the shop window - like delicate, thin shift dresses - but I know that they would look completely different when hanging over my boobs.

On the other hand, I look great in cap sleeves because they balance my skinny shoulders with my wide hips.

And a tight, fitted top emphasizes the difference between my bust and waist and looks much better on me than something that is loose and drapy.

You just need to understand what type of clothing flatters you.

I completely disagree!  Jeans are cut for thin people, even the plus-size ones are just bigger versions of skinny-people styles, and don't take into account that larger women have different shapes than smaller ones.  I have never found a pair of jeans that really flatter me.  Even the much-vaunted bootcut style is a fail, as my calves are too big.  I've tried hundreds of pairs in all different styles and nothing looks good.  I prefer loose, flowy trousers and fabrics that are less constricting than denim.

Not to mention that skinny jeans don't look good on anyone, even the skinny model types.

[smiley=heart.gif] the red hooker shoes!!  I have some VERY similar except they are a bright maroon and shiny pleather instead of suede.   ;D
