iPod itouch
« on: August 10, 2010, 02:58:56 PM »
Anyone have one?
Love it? hate it?
Pros and cons?

DH loves my iphone to play words with friends and other games...
Since he has alot of travel time from here to work on the train, planes and taxis I figured this would be perfect!  I could dump all his music on it and even put episodes of true blood or movies to watch AND he can play games on it (the ones that son't need wifi).

considering he is NOT techy but I know he can figure his way around my iphone I thought I would see what others think of it?

thanks

LOVE LOVE LOVE mine. Get the biggest one, though, bc tv shows take up a lot of space. I think you can get a 32g one now (I have an 8g). So many cool things and it's easy peasy to use. He should have no trouble if he's used to an iphone. Will he have easy access to charge it, though? I find mine lasts enough for a flight to watch a few shows, but not much longer....

I think the major con of the iPod Touch is the same as any Apple product: the warranty issues. My boyfriend has an iPod Touch and the button on his broke, which made it difficult to use. He took it to an Apple store and was told that they couldn't replace those buttons and that he'd simply have to buy a new iPod. A few months later, he came to the states and we visited NYC. We found a little place under a cheap souvenir shop (oh so reputable, lol) where a guy was able to fix it for $70. Of course it was a bit illegal as Apple doesn't like anyone else touching their products, but the fact that it was fixable and Apple wouldn't do it was pretty frustrating.

That being said, the iPod Touch is nice and I know my boyfriend really likes his. He's planning to get rid of it, though, as he worries that the button will break again and he'll be back in that situation.

You could always consider an iPad as well, if he's okay with a bigger size. They're a similar setup as well. I would actually prefer these since they have a larger touch keyboard and would be better for reading. One major downside is that they don't have Flash.

I second the iPad recommendation, especially as he's traveling. The battery life is much better and the larger screen size is handy for videos/books/games. Also, with the iPad you have the option of wireless.

That said, I have an iTouch (not the official name but an easier short-hand) and I love it. It does everything the iPhone does except take pictures and phone/data/sms. The "iPod" app is broken down to music and videos, but they do the same things.

The only things I don't like about my iTouch are the lack of camera (there's even a bit in the case where the camera would be!) and the fact that you can't use it as an external HD like you can with the other iPods. I got a larger capacity so I could use it for file transfers only to find out that they disabled that feature :o(

I'm getting an HTC Desire soon so I might be looking to sell mine in the next month or so.

Thanks guys but an ipad would NEVER fly - heck he wont take my mini laptop on the train.  He works on an oil rig and only has his duffle bag so its the train up, taxi to a plane to a helicopter to the rig.  If it isn't small he will never use it and plus they are expensive! lol

GottagettoLondon - good to know I was thinking the 32GB should be jsut perfect.

The only nightmare I see is hooking up both itouch and iphone to our computers (I will and can tackle that later) ;-)

I got mine for free about a year ago (a friend got it for free with her educational laptop purchase) and I really do love it.  I never expected to use it nearly as much as I do!  I've had an iPod for ages and I loved that but didn't really think I'd use the additional non-music playing features as much as I do. I do wish it had internet everywhere instead of just on wifi but really, small beans.

We gave my sister one for her graduation an she loved it!

Having both on one computer isn't that bad.

The iPod has wireless  ???

I love mine too.  DH got me a refurbished one for my birthday last year, and it works just like new.  I use it every day, mostly because I have dictionary apps (yeah, language teacher lol), but also for internet, books, games, tv, weather, all kinds of stuff.  Mine is 16 gig (not available anymore) and it holds several hundred songs and all three series of Gavin and Stacey, but without much room left after that.  One thing you do have to be careful of is the syncing--if you buy songs directly from iTunes using the wifi (which is awesome), you can't do an automatic sync with your computer, or those songs could be erased.  Better to sync manually, though that's a PIA.  But honestly, it's the best gadget ever, couldn't be easier to use, I would totally recommend it :)

iTouches can connect to other wifi networks. With an iPad you can get a simcard and connect to data networks. That's the distinction I meant :o)

I think an ipod touch sounds perfect for your DH.  We have an ipod touch and an ipad and personally we really prefer the ipad.  Pros include built in speakers (so I can use it as a kitchen radio even if I'm moving around loads), the option of connecting to 3g if wireless isn't available, the larger screen for playing games watching shows and more easily navigating the internet, and the excellent battery life.  With the ipod touch we kind of miss those things, and if it were an iphone we'd probably use it more because we always have our phones with us anyway, whereas carrying something that's like an iphone but with fewer features doesn't appeal as much.

However, like you said, if he's into having something small and portable, able to play games and watch shoes, low cost, and still able to access the internet if he has a wireless connection, the ipod touch sounds like it'll be great.  But is there any reason you're not just getting him an iphone instead?

He is of the old school....Has vodafone and likes his 8mp camera on his basic phone with a real keyboard.  He hates the touch screen for numbers and texting ( I did too but got used to it).

I think if I got him an iphone he would whinge...Itouch I can buy in the states for $260 and I could not get one here for £165 so since I am paid is USD it makes more sense to buy it there.  I could always buy an iphone in the states but honestly I dont think he would like it but the itouch I think he would use. I wish it was simple to get an iphone and not pay a small fortune in monthly fees/contracts and buy the phone.  When I bought my iphone here it hurt lol I bought mine out right so I didnt have a contract.

Okay, I think you're spot on then.  If he's happy with his current phone and wouldn't like the size or cost of the ipad, I think an ipod touch would be great.  You can still get all of the same games and apps on it, plus watch tv shows and listen to music, and he's comfortable with the screen size because of using your iphone, and he can still browse the internet with a wifi connection.

Another iTouch lover here...I was very skeptical about watching TV shows on mine, as I like to actually be able to *see* what is going on, but I had a long train journey...and an episode of Top Chef that I bought off iTunes...so I gave it a shot and surprisingly the screen is actually large enough to see what is happening!!! It was fabulous and totally finished winning me over :-). I have the 32G one, as I had previously struggled with a 4G Nano that barely held any music and I am extremely pleased! I can have TV episodes on it AND all my music and I am in looooove!

My daughter replaced her 120GB iPod (hard drive crashed) with a 16GB iPod Touch.  She loves it.

I got mine on Regent Street with a £120 rebate. I love it but I am probably not using it the way most people do. I have the NY Times app which I access through whatever wireless connection I am near so I can read the paper on the go, and I also downloaded Stanza and read books on the train and when I travel. My favorite application is Google Maps but it only words when there is wireless available. Since I've just moved to strip-mall Florida and drive everywhere it's a bit less useful but I think it's a lovely gadget.
