Sponge Cake - 9x13 Pan
« on: August 11, 2010, 01:28:49 PM »
Does anyone have a good sponge cake recipe where you use a 9 x 13 pan?  I'm making a treausre chest cake for my son's 4th birthday this weekend and the directions tell how to put it together, but don't give a recipe for the sponge cake!

If you check any American recipe site, the vast majority of the recipes you find will be designed for a 9"x13" pan (or two 8" round pans).  That's basically the standard size.

I personally like http://allrecipes.com/.  Just make sure you're on the American version of the site.  It's got several regional links at the very bottom of the page.  You should be able to find just about any flavor you can think of.  And probably a few you can't! :)

Thanks.  So would a recipe that works for 2 8" round pans work with a 9x13 pan?  Sorry if I sound a bit clueless!!!  :o

Yes, it might take a little longer, and you might want to lower the temperature just a little, so that the edges don't get too done before the middle is done.

You could cover with foil to keep it from getting too brown before the inside fully cooks, if you needed to.  :)

Just a thought, I've always used a pound cake recipe when constructing birthday cakes.  As it is denser, it seems to be easier to work with.  Haven't done a treasure chest, but have done a pirate, butterfly,a cake with a bunch of stars,  dolphins, and a death star.

Thanks everyone! The cake came out wonderfully! The party is tomorrow. My son had the best time helping to decorate it. I'll try to post a photo!
