US Credit Card.. to keep or not to keep?
« on: August 11, 2010, 04:51:19 PM »
I only have one credit card for emergencies and don't have any balance on it. I am not sure what to do about it, do I need to report to the credit card company that I am moving out of the country? I see they do have international credit cards, so am wondering if they would make me change to one of those or if I can keep the account as it is. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I would keep it! It i shard to get credit in the UK so just notify the CC company you are moving to the UK and give them your new address.
I have mine still and use it lots on amazon.co.uk  and just pay it online with my US bank account.

Can't hurt to keep it  ;D

Thanks Jenn! It's good to know I can keep it, always nice to have for the unexpected.

I had a US credit card when I moved over (no balance).  They had problems with my foreign address coming up right on their system (and on my statements).  I was afraid my statements would go astray over here, so I directed statements to my brother's house in Maryland.  (Of course, looking back now, I should have gone to e-statements when they offered that, which is by the by now.)

I used it a few times for rental cars & such when I went back to the US, then I stopped using it altogether.

Recently, I thought to myself - what's the point?  (I could get credit here by now if I want any.)  So I canceled it finally!  But that was 6+ years in.  :)

I've kept my US credit and debit cards, even though I've been here for going on ten years now. It's useful for me because:

1. Both cards are with the same credit union that the rest of my family banks with, so they can transfer money into my account and I can withdraw it at any cash machine here
2. The APR on my US credit card is 9%-something, as opposed to my Barclaycard (Platinum), which is 20%-something. This makes a huge difference on large purchases.
3. They don't use the crappy "Verified by Visa" system in the US so I like to use my US debit card for online purchases to avoid all that BS

Like Mrs R, I initially had problems putting my UK address onto my US account, so I had to ring up to let a customer service person add it manually to my account. No biggie, and I receive my statements, letters, and cards fine (though most of my statements are pdfs these days).

I've kept mine. We've used them for big ticket purchases (computers, iPad) that we then bring over later or send with friends. It's also just useful in general while travelling as some countries operate in dollars as well as local currency, and we can avoid paying a fee.

My wonderful wife, (UKC, US resident alien (she can still travel to AZ without being deported)) had a Barclaycard that she kept while she lived over here. After her parents died she switched her address to our US address and within a year they advised her without a UK address they would have to close the account. She switched the address to her brothers and they kept the account open, but if we hadn't gotten the notification we would have been screwed. When we move to the UK I will also keep an US card but keep a US address on file. Of course that means keeping an US Bank account open as well, since I can't pay in pounds. At least I won't have to pay all those silly foreign transaction fees when I come back to the States for a visit.

I'd also keep the cards because if you use them whilst in the US, it may help maintain some kind of credit rating, should you ever decide to return.

I still have one Canadian credit card and bank cards for this purpose and it also helps because I just transfer money to that account prior to any holiday trip there to keep my money secure.

Another vote for keeping it. My having an old barely used credit card from the US was the biggest factor in keeping my credit score high when we moved back to the US. I was able to add my DH and he's got a score now as well rather than having to build it from scratch which takes forever.
