Do you believe in psychics, paranormal, spirits, etc?
« on: August 12, 2010, 03:46:37 PM »
Hi everyone,
I haven't posted in AGES!  Just got back home from the States (that's a whole other post for another time).  Anyways, while we were there my Mom went to see a psychic who apparently told her something very interesting about me.  (My Mom and I have both always believed in psychic ability and have good reason to).  Well, my Mom won't tell me what she said because she wants to see when it happens.  Apparently whatever it is, it ends well.
Anyways, I was talking about this with my husband, who is a firm non-believer in all things supernatural.  Needless to say, it was a short discussion.
So this got me to thinking, am I one of the few that actually believes in things like this???

I know plenty of people who do believe, but I'm afraid I'm with your husband on this one.

I do. My family has had a few instances of "spirit contact" and I have had a few readings that are just too accurate to be anything else.

I don't know how much of it I believe or don't believe as I've never had any kind of experience, but I'm certainly fascinated with all of it! I think it's part of why Fall is my favorite time of year, lots of programs on ghosts and stuff to go along with Halloween.  There's something about "the unknown" that I just love. :)

Major sceptic here. Darren Brown has shown how cold reading can lead to 'spookily accurate' statements. No psychic has ever proven their ability in a proper experimental environment, and until one does, I'm filing all of that stuff with fairies, leprechauns, unicorns and gods in my 'not real' file.

In your husband's camp, I'm afraid.  Although I do love the story aspect of it all and am often fascinated by the myths that surround certain areas.

I'm a believer of all of it.  I do believe there are scams and frauds but that does not stop me from believing in supernatural.  I have had personal experiences myself that cannot be explained via scientific theories and I have looked.

So, you have a believer here.

Can't be explained by science yet does not equal can't be explained by science at all. People used to think diseases were caused by evil spirits and bad humours, and now we know about microbes.

All I know is there are many things that are unknown and it is not my style to think it is not possible just because that is what I might believe.  This world is way too mysterious and grand for me to think I know all about it.

I personally think "psychics" are charlatans who at best are deluded and at worst are predators and leeches on people's grief and gullibility.

That said, I am vaguely open to the idea of ghosts.  Not that I think they have any thoughts/feelings or consciousness, more that they are recordings made in time somehow.

Nah.

Funnily enough, at work awhile back, I had to ring a client who gave me all kinds of grief for not saying where I was calling from until he'd say it was him on the phone (which we are required to do for strict confidentiality reasons & DPA) - they just have to say (initially) - yeah, it's me who's speaking - before I can proceed.  Anyway, then he told me he did 'psychic readings' for a living.  I guess he's not a very good psychic then (a charlatan!) - else he should have known who I was & why I was calling him & I wouldn't have had to tell him.  Ha!  ::)

For anyone who really digs this stuff, you ought to go to Cassadaga, Florida.

I believe in the possibilities of these sorts of things, but, I haven't had anything supernatural happen to me personally, nor have I ever known anyone who has. But, I'm a "never say never" person on this.

I do to a certain extent.  I think a lot of "psychics" make very generalized statements that do apply to most people.  I'm not so sure that I really believe that people can see the future and things like that.

However, I do believe that people can have premonitions.  There have been many times in my life where I've just had a "feeling" that something bad was going to happen...and found out later that day that something bad did happen.  I didn't see the future and I didn't know what was going to happen or to who...but I knew that something just wasn't "right".  I really hate that because it's a feeling of helplessness...you know something bad is going to happen, but you can't do anything to stop it or help or anything.

Also, I have never seen a ghost or anything like that...but I do think there can be "something" lingering.  The year that my aunt died (which was a few years after her husband had died) we were talking about them during Thanksgiving dinner.  At the same time we were talking about them, for no obvious reason, a decorative glass bottle my aunt had given to my mom "fell" off the shelf it was on and rolled across the floor to the table.
