Anything by Nigel Slater...especially Real Food and The Kitchen Diaries.  Those are probably our top two 'go to' cookbooks.  I also love Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything.

We have our favourites apart from those for ethnic/niche cooking like Mediterranean, vegetarian, etc...but for just basic food, the above 3 would be my top picks.

Passione is the best Italian cookbook ever, Jamie Oliver nicks loads of his recipes from it.

The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz is the best ice-cream recipe book, everything in it is gorgeous! His flavours and textures are amazing.

Those are my two top picks too. You can NEVER go wrong with Nigel Slater. Simple but fabulous dishes, without complicated ingredients or too much faffing about.

Delia's Winter and Summer books are great too.

(I'm very into seasonal cooking, and Nigel and Delia are really good for that.)

I really like my 'Cooking Light' cookbook. They do a book each year of all the recipes published in the magazine over the previous year. I have 2004, but I'd love to get another one. I like the way the categorize the recipes.

Love, love, love cookbooks- one can never have enough!!!

Big fan of my Betty Crocker one (even though its all in cups and Fahrenheit-but I'm sure there's a UK version) because it really explains every little detail of how to cook everything - great for beginners and experienced cooks alike

I sometimes break out the Joy of Cooking and I have a couple of Cooking Light ones which are great

I like my Nigella Express, 30 Minute Meals, and Jamie's American one too

Sometimes I just use allrecipies and cookinglight.com and the www for things too.
And Delicious Magazine!

I've never gotten food on my underpants!

I do that a lot too!  Just Google a recipe for whatever it is that I'd like to make, and then sometimes I make up my own recipe for the dish by pick & mixing what I like from several different recipes for it.  We keep a binder with recipes that we like, printed out from the the internet.  Awhile back, I wanted to make cole slaw like my grandma made & I just googled because I knew there was a famous family style fried chicken restaurant in Kansas that does their cole slaw like that - and yes, there it was!  And it tasted pretty much like grandma's.  :)

I like my Nigella Express,

I want to like it because I really like Nigella herself. But I've never had a good recipe from it.  :(

Wow Nigella has a few up's but a downer too...

I like simple even crockpot would be great.

I use my good housekeeping and betty crocker ones from the states ALL the time and online is my personal recipe card.  I like to flip thru and try stuff if I did this online I would be there all day.  I do have Rachel Ray's 30 min meals but honestly some of the ingrediants are not stuff I would have on hand <shrug>.

I may have to check Nigella out since it was mentioned the most.
thanks ya'll!

My favorite cookbook is Creme de Colorado, it's the Denver Junior League Cookbook and there are recipes in there that can make a grown man cry.  Their Canneloni Crepes are the special thing that everyone I know tries to guilt me into making whenever possible. ;)

Don't mix up Nigel and Nigella! They're two very different people!  ;)

I actually like Nigella usually, but I find her Express cookbook to be too short-cutty. Don't get me wrong - I'm a big fan of shortcuts, but I don't really like the ones she's chosen in that book.

I honestly don't rate celebrity chef's books, but that's me.

they are a bit old, but I love the Moosewood cookbooks. I've never had a flop from there. also the old version of Joy of Cooking. Lots of basics, lots of stuff you'll never make, but be sure to get the older version, they took out some of the best recipes in revisions.

Oh if you like to cook veggie meals, the Moosewood Cookbook is fantastic. I also have one called Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone which is lovely.  Oh and I love the Cook your Own (from the Grow your Own) recipes

True, it is a bit short cutty- but at least its not like Delia's How to Cheat at Cooking  :-X :P

I haven't tried that one!!

I honestly don't rate celebrity chef's books, but that's me.

I wouldn't call Nigel Slater a celeb chef, though. He's a food writer to me. I also love Rick Stein (another celeb), though I know the OP said "no seafood". But Rick Stein is an incredible chef who opened some really successful restaurants. Sure, he's on TV now and is a celebrity, but to me that doesn't take anything away from the fact that he's brilliant at what he does. His recipes are great, too.

So celebrity cookbooks? I have no problem with them if they're good.  :)
