You can bring beer, at least I think you can as long as you declare it and it's not obscene amounts.  I used "smuggle" kind of loosely... ;)

All of the beer talk reminds me of my old workplace in the States. Used to work at a restaurant called the Yardhouse. They had a gazillion beers on tap. I love Blue Moon, and Red Trolley ale.  ;D

That the one in Long Beach? I went there once! Got a photo of me "choosing" from all the taps.
One of my favourite bars in the US is The Ginger Man in NYC

It's a small chain-not quite all over the U.S., but, lots in California, three in the Midwest, and 2 in Florida; I was at the one in San Diego. I've heard that the Long Beach one was gorgeous, though, right on the water and all! Isn't your profile picture with a half-yard? I've always thought I recognised that glass! :D

I've never been to NYC, but, I've heard that the drinks prices are out of control-$14 for a cosmo?!

In places it does, although not really that commonly, at least in most of Brooklyn and the East Village, which is where I frequent.  Pints of decent beers on tap (ie, not Bud or Coors, etc) are usually about $6, $4-5 if you get lucky/happy hour.  I usually pay $8-10 for a fancy cocktail, maybe $7 for a well drink.  Really, you get used to it. *shrug*  I went to NYU so I've never known anything different, in the US at least.  The restaurant where I used to work charged $15 for a "large" frozen margarita (which wasn't really that large) and $50 for a pitcher of margs.  That was a little out of control, considering the ambiance of the place and level of service we were realistically able to provide.

Yeah - the differences between drinking in Manhattan and drinking in Brooklyn were pretty stark.  When I would go out for a night in NYC, to comfortably prepare for anything (including bars with covers, or cabs to and from) I would take out about $100.  I wouldn't always use it all, but it would not be the most crazy thing to anticipate that your night would be that expensive.

When I used to live in Bay Ridge, it'd be half that.  (Then again, we could walk to most places, and none of them were the type to have covers).    Queens, it was similar.  Although in areas like Astoria, and also Park Slope in Brooklyn,  the rents are higher, and correspondingly, so are the drink prices.

Yes, I recall the Long Beach one is right on the harbour, remember sitting next to huge windows opposite the bar. This was back in 2000.

I think it was about $8 a beer when I was in NYC last December. I had a pumpkin ale that was on cask (hand pull beer engine) in the Ginger Man. Usual to see that in the US.

The glass is a wheat beer glass, just a long, tall one, not a half yard. Photo was taken in a brew pub in Dublin.

Might want to try subbing it out with one of the imported Witbeers.  Hoegaarden comes to mind, and I've seen it at quite a few stores, and a few pubs as well

Might want to try out some of the Hefeweizens as well, as they're quite good (Hacker Pschorr, or Franziskaner.  Slightly different profile, but very yummy :)

Agreed....DW loves Blue Moon....over here she likes Hoegaarden, Erdinger and Franziskaner as alternatives.

On several people's reccommendation I tried Hoegaarten last week.  Hated it.  Tried it neat and tried it with lemon.  Hated it.  There was just something about it that didn't sit well...not sure if it was the hints of feet or notions of urine in the bouquet but it just wasn't to my taste.

To update on my search for Blue Moon, I went to the closest Sainsburys on the stockists list to me and they said they stopped carrying it ages ago.  I may ask the manager to get some of it in from the supplier.

I saw a bar in Notting Hill that had Blue Moon on tap for £4. Unfortunately it was during Carnival so I do not remember where it was or the name of the place, but a google search turned up Mall Tavern: 71-73 Palace Gardens Terrace, Notting Hill, W8 4RU
That's not the one I saw, so there are at least 2 in the area!

Also The White Horse on Parson's Green serves Blue Moon, along with Ancor, Flying Dog, Dogfish Head, Brooklyn, Victory, Yards and more!

A friend of mine used to be manager there. I went whilst in London on a course, nice pub, great selection of beers but seemed rather expensive
