Anyone else on Runkeeper?
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:54:34 PM »
Runkeeper is an app for the iPhone and Android phones that uses the built-in GPS to tell you how far and fast you're going during a run/walk/cycle ride/whatever and keeps a little map for you and syncs up to Runkeeper.com to show your progress and optionally to Tweet and post to Facebook when you've completed an activity. There's a free version and a paid version (£5.99).

There's a bunch of other apps that do roughly the same thing, but I've been using this one for about 9-10 months now and I really like it. They've got a small development team and they're pushing updates and improvements all the time, too. I used to use Nike+ but I think this is actually more accurate and you don't have to worry about the batteries dying like you do on the Nike+ foot thing (I had to buy about four of those, as you can't change the battery once they die!).

Right, with that out of the way, is anyone else using this app who is in need of a Street Team? I've got a few people on mine but it's much more fun and motivating when you see what other people are doing, and you know people are watching you so you'd better get out there!

I'm squirrellypoo on there, too. Anyone else? Post your username in this thread!

I downloaded it but I'm a walker not a runner so I'm not sure how much I'll use it :)

If they do it for the itouch, then I will be doing it on my return from NY!  I like those trackers, but I couldn't find a good one for my bberry, but my dad is giving me his itouch (he got a new one).

The iTouch uses the exact same apps as the iPhone so you can install it. The only problem is that a lot of iPhone apps like this  use GPS to track where you're running an how fast you're going and the iTouch doesn't have GPS :o( It can detect your location based on the location of your wifi signal, but that won't help you when you're out and about.

Yeah, I've installed it on my touch, but realized it needed GPS. I hope to eventually get a real phone... In the meantime I'm stuck with nike+ (which I really loved until it started acting up the past few months.)

oh I had no idea the touch didn't have GPS! Yeah, then this app isn't much use to you without it. It relies solely on the GPS for your speed, distance, and mapping, but that's a GOOD thing overall because it means you can turn off data roaming altogether and still use it on holiday. :)
