Where to find a Notary in the UK
« on: August 17, 2010, 04:37:44 PM »
Before we left the US to come and live in the UK, we mailed in some paperwork regarding our US retirement. We've been in the UK for a few days now and my neighbor (who is collecting our US mail) said that the paperwork was returned and needs to be corrected and resubmitted. Our signatures on this paperwork requires a Notary.

She is going to mail me over the new forms but I 1) have no idea where you begin to look for a Notary, and 2) don't have a clue about what they charge.

We are temporarily living in Laleham (near Staines) with my mum-in-law.

Can someone steer me in the right direction?

I just did a quick google search and came up with a few in your area.

Do you know if the paperwork requires that it be a US notary?

If so, the US Embassy in London offers notary services to US citizens.

Otherwise, you will find UK notaries everywhere. Hubby and I used one when we lived in Reading through http://www.thenotariessociety.org.uk/
He was a semi-retired solicitor (I believe the majority of UK notaries are solicitors)

But check with whoever sent you the paperwork first to make sure it's okay. My bank didn't care but deferred to the county clerk where our paperwork would be recorded for the final word. Their answer: "as long as it's translated into English you can use a foreign notary"  ;D

I had to use a "Commissioner for Oaths" for absentee ballots back in the olden days.

Thank you for your replies. I looked in the phone directory but did not think to do a Google search. I am also not sure if it will require a US notary so I probably should check on that first. Sounds like a phone call is in order.

Thanks again for the help!
