Thanks for the suggestions Tracey. I have been buying Hoegarrden. I did try a lager in Greenwich yesterday that I liked more than the wheat (Meantime Brewery) so I think I'll just start trying more lagers. It even mentioned "hops" in the description but yet didn't taste too hoppy. Whenever I see "hops" in the description I've avoided trying that particular beer, but I guess I won't let that stop me anymore!

There's a beer festival at Smallhythe this weekend - may have to check that out w/ DH. http://www.ashfordtourism.co.uk/component/eventlist/details/142-music-and-beer-festival-v1.html

Shelly, American hops can be a lot more bitter and stronger tasting than the hops you get in beer here. So its worth trying different types of beer here, as its not as overpowering.  There are many, many, many real ales here and you can get 1/2 pints at various pubs to try something out.  You may find a new found love of beer!

Thought I'd already posted this a couple of hours ago but seemingly not!

Much of what you describe Shelly, is very much like my wife, She likes wheat beers - Blue Moon, Hoegaarden she tends to drink. What she says is that she doesn't like "bitter aftertaste" of much of the beer that I drink. She does like stouts and porters though that are sweeter and less bitter.
Most real ale pubs will let you try a sample of a few beers - they'll pull half inch or so into a glass, and are happy for you to try a few.
she did like a few of the beers in Belgium that we tried as well.

It's funny the wheat beer thing has been brought up. I did tend to enjoy them (heck, I like just about any kind of beer) but I've found recently that I've gone off them a bit. I had one the other night that I used to enjoy, but I found myself not wanting to finish it. I'm starting to wonder if it's because I've been drinking seriously hoppy craft beers almost exclusively now that I'm back in the US and the wheat beer simply doesn't scratch that itch?

Perhaps I'll revisit them once I'm off my summer IPA spree...though pumpkin ale season is upon us and I did have a delicious stout the other night that may have inspired an impending stout spree... :)

As of now, that is most definitely my favourite pumpkin ale. I intend to buy some this weekend now that it's about to be September. Just know that, if there were a way, I would e-mail/fax you and phatbeetle all the pumpkin ale you could manage!  :)

Looks like we're potentially going to the Stockbridge Tap beer fest in Edinburgh next weekend.
Here's the list, which looks interesting:

More moments of joy in my 'recently returned to the US, living in fear of no beer joy' life:

Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale - lovely and brewed in Rochester, NY.

Samuel Adams Harvest Pumpkin - a bottle of beautiful liquid to make you smile with pure bliss.

Newcastle Werewolf - limited edition seasonal perfection from the wonderful people who bring us the beauty of Newcastle Brown Ale. I don't think I can rave enough about how amazing this one is. I can only wonder if it is a US only thing, or just happens to not be in Blackburn, because a friend of ours who is a diehard Newcy Brown fan has never heard of it.

Newcastle Werewolf is brewed by Caledonian.
Newcastle Brown Ale is brewed by Heineken, essentially... brewed at John Smiths, but they are owned by Heineken.

Have Heineken taken over Caley as well?

Just googled it... yes, they have!
Explains A LOT!  :-X
(the Wetherspoons up here have just completed a Caley beer fest in many of their locations, and the beers were... let's just say, not to our tastes.)
