If you're in London and a fan of a good craft beer, there's this: http://britishcraftbeerchallenge.co.uk/

Didn't make it to round one, but very much looking forward to Round 2 and hoping to see the likes of Stone, Victory, Dogfish Head, Allagash, Anchor, Bear Republic, etc., etc. But the US competitors aren't listed yet! Give me American-style IPAs! Give me all of them!

A friend has just returned from Germany with a car boot full of Pyraser fest-biers and stark-biers.  So we're going over to his to drink it!

If anyone lives in or around Manchester there's an American beer festival taking place at The Beagle in Chorlton. As with a lot of bars around Manchester, they already have a good selection of American craft beers but this looks like a proper takeover :)

Guerilla Eats, the Manchester street food guys, will be cooking USA themed food too. I've never eaten any of their stuff but when we were at the pub last week their food selection looked tasty and varied - there were even plenty of vegan and veggie options for weirdo's like me!

Looks great but those prices!

Been to Ossett today to the Brewery Tap and I thought they were bad enough.

Called on the way back from visiting my friend to pick up the Black Isle - so thats me sorted this evening!

Decided I needed to use up some Wetherspoon's/Camra vouchers. So took a trip this afternoon. A very nice pint of Geeves Brewery Gunwale Dance. A pale ale. This is a small brewery local to Barnsley but other than beer festivals I don't come across their beers much which is a shame. They do have a brewery tap now in Wombwell, about 6 miles from Barnsley, which I keep meaning to go to but only open at evenings.

Specially for Albatross - Then to the 2nd Wetherspoon's in Barnsley and selected a pint of Ossett Brewery Sizzler. I'd had this before and it was nice, again a pale ale at 4.1%. Thought I'd go for this over the 5.2% Ossett Excelsior. Took one taste and thought "that doesn't taste as nice as I recall", took another sip and thought it was distinctly sour. took it back and exchanged no problem (the manager also confirmed it was sour and took it off) so ended up with excelsior after all!

After that up to the Old No. 7 (Acorn Brewery tap) and had a nice pint of Titanic Iceberg. I do like the Titanic beers.

Also, last week they had some from Great Newsome Brewery from Hull - highly recommend these beers if you see them.

I could weep!  :\\\'(
I've not been out since Saturday, despite Double Joker and Island Hopping being on locally.   These painkillers must be affecting my judgement!

Just ordered the CAMRA good beer guide for Mr MLG - hope he enjoys it! Does anyone else have one / use it who could provide feedback on what they think of the guide?

Being CAMRA members, of course we have it!
In general, if a pub isn't in the GBG, we don't bother going to it.  The guide is written by CAMRA members (I wrote one of the entries in the Glasgow section!), and the pubs are visited regularly to check they are still up to standard.

I think it's rather harsh not to go in a pub just because it's not in the guide. Not sure if this is the case for all branches, but I know that some are given a certain number of entries, so you could be in a town that has a dozen great pubs but only, say 4 entries. I also use the Cask Marque website to check for pubs as these are establishments that have to meet certain standards on how they keep their beer.
The GBG is a good starting point for looking for pubs and on a short visit some place you could probably limit your pub visits to that, but also try to check out the local CAMRA websites where they may have a guide to their pubs.

The GBG is worth buying, my friend and I alternate who buys it, and we basically buy a new one every 2 years between us, the older one is then passed to the person that didn't buy.

Yeah... in the interest of trying to make short post (broken arm, etc), i probably didn't say that quite right.
The GBG is good for when you're visiting a place you don't know...it can help to make sure you dont waste time visiting totally unsuitable places.  Then when you find yourself in a good pub, you can ask around, or look to see if there is a local pub guide on display, to perhaps check out other places.

But in general, when in an unfamiliar town, we wouldn't go to a place that's not in the Guide, unless we've had something recommended.

The Guide isn't the be-all, end-all, though... several of the pubs in the Glasgow section of the Guide, I would never think of drinking in (unless the jungle drums revealed they've got a barrel of something wonderful on!)  And the pub i had to review for the Guide was one of my most hated pubs, but the members voted it in, so it had to be done.

Even if i walked into the best real ale pub in Glasgow, if i look at the board and don't see anything to tempt me, i will walk out and try somewhere else.

I guess at the end of the day, I depend on the jungle drums/Twitter/FB more than the GBG, but in unfamiliar territory, sometimes the GBG is all you've got.

Does the Guide include anything about the food in relation to the beer or beer gradings for people with tummy trouble (relating to beer, the yeast, maybe?).

Cheers!  ;D

If there are regular beers that they have on all the time, it will state which beers they are.  But if they have guest ales, they wont be able to itemise those in the Guide... it will just say 'guest ales', as the selection will likely be changing daily.

The Guide will also state if the place serves food, but wont go into detail.

We are out tomorrow for a friend's birthday doing the Trans-Pennine Rail Ale Trail - as featured by James May and Oz Clarke.
http://www.realaletrail.net/

I read an article recently that said it had started getting out of hand with hen and stag parties and general lager louts and bawdy behaviour. Hope it's ok tomorrow. Looking forward to it. Will report back on what it was like.
Albatross, we are meeting up in The Hop in Leeds - Ossett Brewery pub!  ;D
