Sightseeing with guests
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:25:05 AM »
I'm not sure where to post this so I'll try it here.

My brother and ladyfriend are coming to visit in two weeks, they'll be with us for 5 days.  (They're also spending 5 days in London before heading this way.)  We're very excited to have company.  But we're still deciding where to take them, what to see.
We live in North Yorkshire so we'll be showing them "local" sights.  We're thinking a day out in each of these places.
1.  Whitby
2.  York
3.  Harrogate, Harewood, our neighborhood
4.  a day in Sheffield having a great time with my in-laws
5.  we might put them on a train to Liverpool for a Beatles tour
Does that look like a good time?  Also, one of the 5 days is a Sunday so will any of these places not shut down at 4:00?

I want to be sure to feed them...
1.  Fish & Chips  ---  Surely in Whitby, yes?
2.  Pie & peas
3.  Pork Sandwich w/everything  ---  Is there an excellent one in York maybe?
4.  Curry

I would appreciate any tips and suggestions.  Thank you!!   :)

If you get a nice weather day, I'd take them to Fountains Abbey - but yeah, with only 5 days to work with, I think you've a nice itinerary there.  :)

Fish & chips in Whitby - yes!  The Magpie is always reviewed in the national press as the best, but I've heard another one right near it (more or less) is just as good - I think that's Fusco's/Quayside - just doesn't get all the press that The Magpie does (or the queues either).

I've eaten inside The Magpie at least a couple times & it is good, but the last time, Steve & I decided we're only going to do fish & chips takeaway - because that just seems more authentic.

Well I love Bettys (the tea room) in York, but you've got that in Harrogate too - and I like the Harrogate one even better.  :)

Oh yeah - my friend in York raves about that place.  But I've never been (yet).

(I'm going to move this into the Travel Section.)

You could probably see both Whitby & Scarborough in the same day too, if you wanted!

I love browsing in all the little, interesting & different shops there in York - around the Shambles area & near the Minster.

Harewood has a drive in on in early September, which is great fun:

Pickles and Potter is excellent for pork pies, Mr MLG tells me, but it is in Leeds:

There's also loads of Yorkshire threads and here's two I found:

Rievaulx Abbey and surrounding area is beautiful:

Have fun!  :)

Oh yeah - don't forget about Haworth if there are any Brontë fans, Haworth is lovely!

And the Dales - if they like beer, go to Masham where they have both the Theakstons & the Black Sheep breweries.

I like both Skipton & Grassington for Dales towns.  Wallace & Gromit love Hawes, of course.

We went to Kettlewell on Sunday for the Scarecrow Festival.  It was lovely.

Oh yeah - MLG!  Em Brulee, the burlesque singer, who sings/appears in Symphony for Yorkshire (I think she's from Leeds) - she was the compere at the wedding reception we went to last Friday!  I think she was one of their bridesmaids as well!  :)

Kettlewell is very nice too - heeee, I've walked through all of them, ya know.  Nearly drowned in Kettlewell...  Lol!  :P  (that was an especially eventful day, when they had the flooding in Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, etc back in 2007...I look far too silly & happy for such a miserable day)

Have to chime in on this one. My US Civil Partner and I went to North Yorkshire in April and stayed in Pickering for a week. We absolutely fell in love with the whole area - the North York Moors, the Howardian Hills, York, Pickering, Helmsley, Whitby, Castle Howard - EVERYTHING. It was a life-changing experience for us to the extent that we now have our home in South Wales up for sale and are planning to move to North Yorkshire. We especially like the old Geogian market town of Easingwold, just 13 miles north of York and this is where we hope to relocate. This is a major step for my partner, having already done the transatlantic move only last October. But this will be about starting our lives together as a couple and discovering new places and a new life together and we are really excited about it and just hoping we get an offer for our house soon.

What an exciting adventure mhs.  Best of luck on your house sale and relocation.

We spent a day exploring Helmsley not long ago and it was lovely.  Ate the most delicious pasty ever.   :P   A Yorkish pasty.  http://www.yorkshirebaker.co.uk/yorkish-pasty.html
