What's up with all this Hokey Cokey stuff?
« on: August 22, 2010, 12:21:15 PM »
"Knees bent, arms stretched, rah rah rah"?  Not on my watch, mister.  I do the Hokey Pokey or I do nothing at all.  I will acquiesce to driving on the wrong side of the road, hunting for ice in the grocery store, mushy peas, soggy bacon, no free refills and all the rest, but I'm afraid that I have to draw the line somewhere.  Sheesh.

And that, my friends, is what it's all about.

Not the best of sources, but would suggest the original name is Hokey Cokey!

Do you work in childcare as well?! I have the same feelings about "winding the bobbin up". I manage to stifle it, though. "Twinkle twinkle chocolate bar" makes me giggle internally, though.

I've heard people say "okey cokey" here as well (instead of the US okey dokey).

"Hokey Pokey" was ice cream, and "the Hokey Cokey" was a dance, I think? Or was it the other way around?

Oh man! My DH has the tendency to mishear lyrics, so we both thought the "Hockey Cokey" was something he made up.

Now I have to live with the fact he was right and that people actually sing the Hockey Cokey, bleh. I think I am going to let him keep on thinking the Hokey Pokey is right.

Ahhh, I get it now. I've heard the same, actually, come to think of it. I usually just go with general "OK!" or "yeah" myself.

Working with 2-4 year olds I've learned to just go with the UK versions... Hokey Cokey, Incy Wincey Spider, The Farmer's in his Den, etc.

Itsy Bitsy spider vs Incy Wincey is basically just subbing the name.
Can't really remember the exact words I learned to Hokey Pokey versus Hokey Cokey

The Farmer in The Dell vs The Farmer's in His Den

The Farmer's In His Den (how we sing it at work)

The farmer's in his den,
The farmer's in his den,
E I addy O - The farmer's in his den.
(with one child in the centre of a circle)

The farmer wants a wife,
The farmer wants a wife,
E I addy O - The farmer wants a wife.
(the farmer picks a wife)

The wife wants a child,
The wife wants a child,
E I addy O - The wife wants a child.
(the wife picks a child)

The child wants a nurse,
The child wants a nurse,
E I addy O - The child wants a nurse.
(the child picks a nurse)

The nurse wants a dog,
The nurse wants a dog,
E I addy O - The nurse wants a dog.
(the nurse picks a dog)

The dog wants a bone,
The dog wants a bone,
E I addy O - The dog wants a bone.
(the dog picks a bone)

We all clap the bone,
We all clap the bone,
E I addy O - We all clap the bone.

The farmer in the dell (how I learned it as a kid)

The farmer in the dell
The farmer in the dell
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The farmer in the dell

The farmer takes a wife
The farmer takes a wife
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The farmer takes a wife

The wife wants a child
The wife wants a child
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The wife wants a child

The child wants a nurse
The child wants a nurse
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The child wants a nurse

The nurse wants a dog
The nurse wants a dog
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The nurse wants a dog

The dog wants a cat
The dog wants a cat
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The dog wants a cat

The cat wants a mouse
The cat wants a mouse
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The cat wants a mouse

The mouse takes the cheese
The mouse takes the cheese
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The mouse takes the cheese

The cheese stands alone
The cheese stands alone
Hi-ho, the derry-o
The cheese stands alone

I'm glad someone else thinks so PB, I kept meaning to write a rambling livejournal post about it but never have.

Obviously you've just not been looking in the right spots.

Ice is usually kept in the freezer sections and we like Harvester which has an unlimited salad bar and free soda refills. And for crispy bacon try streaky bacon and just cook the you know what out of it.
