Black pudding
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:40:19 PM »
DW and myself often discuss what things we can get here that we wouldn't be able to in the US, and what I would miss. I know I would miss pork pies (from the butcher, not supermarket), and those aren't easy to make at home either.
Today watching a cookery programme and they were using black pudding, so she said that would be another. I wouldn't miss that as it's very rare I have any, just if staying in a B&B and they have it with the English breakfast, but it might be a case of wanting some purely because you can't!
So got to looking online to see if it's available in the states....specifically on the east coast. Found a couple of Irish pubs in Philly that include it in an Irish breakfast.

There's a place in Cheektowaga, NY that sells proper British fare. Its a couple from Yorkshire that own/run the place. I can't remember the name of it right now but I do know they have a mail service. Bacon, sausages, assorted pies and pasties.

I really want to try black pudding but I don't know if I can bring myself to it.  Maybe if I had tried it before I knew what it was.  I mean...I've eat hot dogs and snails and other things that are probably just as 'gross'...but I just don't know about this... :-\\\\

I've tried it.  It's not as bad as I thought it would be, but it's just not my thing.  I only really like to eat poultry and fish as far as meat goes though, so there's a bit of a bias there.

You can get back bacon via mail order and HP sauce is available everywhere. Unfortunately. ;)

I miss cumberland sausages but I believe I could mail order them from a place in NYC.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

You can get black pudding (one of my favorites), back bacon, bangers, etc here at some specialty British shops.  I know in Boston we've been able to get these items [when we lived in LA, it was SO much easier to get (there was even a shop that sold home-made meat pies and such) as there is a massive British population in Santa Monica].  You pay quite a bit more for it, but on those times you just have that undeniable craving, it's worth every penny.   ;)

Man, I looked EVERYWHERE for HP sauce while I was still living in Dallas and couldn't find it anywhere at all. Maybe it's just everywhere in New England?  :-\\\\

I grew up among a very vibrant Irish American community in Cleveland, and they love their black pudding. Most Irish shops in Ohio tend to stock lots of sausages and black pudding (can't say I'm a fan, however)

There's also a great website (and a few others) that ships lots of Irish/English foods  foodireland dot com  I've ordered lots of things for my parents through their site with few problems.

DH would agree with you TykeMan, he's really going to miss pork pies when we move.   :(  And I think making them myself is beyond my culinary abilities.
I admit it, I do like a bit of black pudding once in a while.  And bread & dripping.   :)

It's not hard to make pork pies, and they taste delicious home mase! If you don't have a pie raise you can raise one around a tea cup.

Hot water shortcrust is your best bet for pastry as you can raise it easily :)
