American expat in UK - just bought car. Insurance question
« on: August 23, 2010, 04:13:26 PM »
My husband and I have just moved to the UK. He's UKC, I am USC.

We just purchased a used car today (cash).

He has had a UK driving license for years; I only have my American license at the moment.

I have been a U.S. driver for 40 years (I am 55 years old), and we had car insurance when we lived in the US.

Just for now, his mum just put him on her policy until we can sort out the issue of insurance for me.

Can anyone give me some guidance on this?

1. Is step one to to obtain a Provisional license in order to be put on an insurance policy?

2. Where's the best place to start when looking for car insurance? Hubby has had car insurance here before, but it would have been 6 years ago.

3. We brought with us our 10-year certified driving records for each of us from the US showing no accidents, and also letters from our insurance company (State Farm).

Thank you!

12/10 - Received ILR
11/13 - Received British Citizenship

Yes, his mum can add him to her policy if they will allow it.

1.  Yes.
2.  Contact an insurance broker.  The American ex-pat driving scenario is too complex for those comparison websites.   A broker will save you loads of stress and IME, get you a much better deal than you could find on your own.
3.  Some UK insurance companies will accept these and apply a no-claims bonus to your policy, saving you ££

There are a billion threads about insurance, and the various problems and levels of stress people experienced, but seriously just call a broker and get it done and dusted.
