How do you find a USDA Vet???
« on: August 25, 2010, 07:26:28 PM »
How do you find a USDA Vet?? I can only find a website that states there is only one office per state?? Is that correct?? If that is so that mean I have to drive 6 hours to get my dogs signed off???  Surely there are more that one per state right??? I live in Florida. Also I was reading on other posts that there was some discrepancy on which was the correct paperwork to take to the USDA vet. How do I know which is correct?? Do they not have the paperwork? Thanks!

I had a list of all the USDA vets and yes there is generally one per state.  My state(Colorado) had two, but I dont think that is the norm.

So.... if you live on the opposite side of the state you have to take your pet and drive all the way there??? That is crazy!! Seems like your vet could just sign off on some papers and you could send the paperwork to them.... grrrrr The sure don't make this easy do they??

No they do not make it easy.  You may be able to fax it to them, send payment and have them fax it back. I was not far from them so it was easy.  Whatever you do fax them the info first.  In my case I had to have it redone which would have been a waste of a drive if they had not looked over it first.  Also I had to make an appt.

Your pet does not have to go, it is just paperwork.

We fedexed the paperwork with the payment to the USDA state office, enclosed a return fedex envelope that would be billed back to me, and the whole thing was out and back in 72 hours.  Painless.  I'd call and ask them if that's an option.  It was for Massachusetts.   :)

Yes, I know of at least two other states (WA and CO) where you can do it by mail/FedEx, but I went in person because the office was in my city and it was convenient.  They don't need to see your pet, they just need to review and stamp the documents your own vet has prepared.  Good luck with your preparations!
