Where to put the litterbox?
« on: August 31, 2010, 07:38:03 PM »
I have two adorable kitties, and when we move back to the UK they are certainly coming with us. So I have one big question that's already nagging me: where do you put the litter box in a small UK house so that it is out of sight and out of mind? I can't picture where it would go without a basement.

I know most cats in the UK are free range and just do their business outside, but mine have always been indoor. What do cat owners do in the UK? Seriously, this is bothering me!  ;D

I live in a 2br flat (probably 500-600sq ft?), and I have mine in the corner of the lounge. It's pretty much out of sight, and out of mind unless my cat is busy flinging litter around. I clean it out every morning, and if I notice it, in the evenings as well.

I would've preferred to put it in a closet somewhere, but knowing my cat, he'd just end up getting litter all over my clothes, just for fun.

When I lived in a small apartment in the states and had a cat-- I put the litter box in the bathroom, of course that means there are times it isn't available to the cat, but I never found it a problem...it fit under the sink.

right now I have one in the spare bedroom and one in a corner of our master bedroom. Back in Florida though, I was living in probably a smaller house and had three - one in the bedroom, one in the hallway and one in the bathroom. I only have two at the moment but they are hyuuuge.

Thanks for the replies so far... I have always lived in small apartments here in the US too, and used to keep the litterbox in the bathroom when we had one cat. But now that we have two, it's a little harder because it's double the usage. We definitely need two boxes!

Thankfully we moved to another another apartment has an unused staircase, and put their litterboxes at the landing on top, which works great for us now.

But I am trying to figure out the logisitics of two litter boxes in the average UK house, especially since we can't let the cats into our bedroom because DH is semi-allergic.

We've got a spare room/guest room that we're currently using as the cat room.  When guests come, we move the boxes (we have 2 giant ones) into the office.  In our last apartment, which didn't have the extra room, we used the ensuite off the master bedroom.  It was so tiny as to be almost unusable, and the shower was lousy anyway, so it it became the exclusive domain of the cats.  That was nice, because it kept the litter pretty contained.

The best situation was when we had an apartment with a laundry room.  Funny, I didn't see any of those in my London apartment search.   :P

Bathroom.  It's where I've always kept the litter boxes for my cats.  You might be able to find places with big enough bathrooms to fit them both.  We definitely could fit two in ours if hard pressed.  I also don't use a big, shallow box.  We use a washing up bowl which is high but with a smaller footprint.  My cat is a flinger and positions himself too high for a short sided box.  In the States he had a covered box, and that has now made it impossible to have something that's not high.  Anyway, smaller washing up bowls might be an option for you as well.

I have a massive cat, which means a massive litter tray. He does spend a lot of time outdoors, but for some reason still comes back inside to do his business.  ::) Fortunately, I've always seemed to have an extra room/area for the tray. Right now it's in our utility space, which is really just a large back porch. In my old house (also in the UK) I had a sort of mud room off the kitchen where I kept it.

Bathroom or utility room. Even the bedroom but not ideal. You'll find a place! :)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Ours is in our home office.  We have a dog-free zone in here because DH can't stand having the dog underfoot in a 10x10 space.  (The dog is 150lbs.)  Our second box was in our living room because our cat with leukemia just picked a spot (he didn't use the litterbox properly because of his illness).  Now that he's gone, we're down to one cat and one box.  She's a litter kicker though so we have a high sided box with a lowered opening for her.

I'd prefer to keep the litter box in the bathroom but this is what works for now.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I can picture it better now. I know it's kind of silly to ask about litter box logistics of a house/flat I don't even own yet, but I'm like that... I get hung up on these things when I'm trying to picture my new life somewhere.

It's good to hear how others manage it. I never knew anyone with an indoor cat when I was over there so I never saw what their setup was. I am sure we'll figure something out when we get there but finding a place with room for litter boxes is definitely something we'll have to consider when looking at places, funny as it sounds. Ah, the joys having cats.  ;D

I had 2 very large cats in a small apartment in New York, and we kept their litter box under the bathroom sink, with a skirt around the sink to hide it.

This way everybody - cats and humans - were doing their business in the same room.

We had ours in the back hall -- right under the telephone shelf  :o Our two kitties went out to roam in the daytime but I liked to get them inside overnight.

Oh man, I totally want one of those!

We used to keep the tray in the hall closet. We had cut a cat flap into it so the cats could come and go as they pleased but we now have to keep our massive stroller in there and there is no room for the tray so it's now in the bathroom, hidden in the corner.

They never use it, though. They go outside but if we don't have it, then they object and poo in the house. Seriously, never use it except when it's no longer there.
