Vonage?
« on: September 01, 2010, 02:03:50 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know if I can have Vonage in Northern Ireland? I have it here and love it. It is so cheap! If I can, do I them still need a line rental as this is an internet phone? And also, how does it affect 911?

Thanks!

We brought our Vonage adaptor with our US phone number with us to London and use it several times a day.

We hooked it up to the internet router and it works just like it did back in the US.  Our broadband internet is through BT, and we needed an incoming line, so we do have a line rental.  There's a landline number attached to that incoming line, but we have never used it.  We use mobiles for UK calls and Vonage for calls to/from the US and everywhere else.

Because our Vonage is a US account, we turned off 911 service because it would be useless while we are out of the country.  In an emergency, we use our mobiles to call 999.

I live in Northern Ireland and have used Vonage for a couple of years now with no problem.  We have cable internet so there's no need for a landline or paying line rental.  We have a UK account and were able to call 999 a few months ago without any problems.

Thank you! Thats great news.....I have 4 kids who want to keep up with all the friends and family in the US and it will be nice to not have to police the phone all the time or get a huge bill!

You can have a look on www.vonage.co.uk to get an idea of the call plans they offer.  The one service we signed up for which we love is the virtual number.  In addition to our normal UK phone number, we pay £2.99 a month for a US virtual number.  Friends in the States that have free domestic long distance can call that number and it's free for them, so it's not me having to call friends/family all the time.

When i decided to move to England back in September 09, I bought the Vonage service back in America and brought it with me so I could keep in contact with my family, its worked a charm but now that I permanantly live here in England, its annoying that I have to pay the bill with USD out of my US bank account...
