It's a 3 door 2002 Toyota Rav4 1.8 Insurance group 9E (worth £3000).  I know that's not the cheapest, but I don't even need comprehensive.

NYBrummie - like I said above. Aviva will NOT take my American driving record into account - not sure if they recently changed their policy, but I'm not paying them £1400.

I would call again and see if you get someone else.  Honestly, it could just be a matter of who you talk to on which day.  I've had similar experiences with banks and loan companies and Amazon.  One person says no, and then you call again a few days later and the next person says yes.

Not saying it'll work, but it's worth a shot!  :)

However, this is sooo making me not look forward to getting car insurance.  :P Good luck and let us know how it all turns out!

This has not been my experience at all.  The brokers know exactly where to go to get you the best rate for your particualar situation and are much easier to reach than someone in a big insurance group.  I have recommended my broker to a few people on UK-Y and he's been able to help all of them.  I can give you his info if you want. Just let me know and I'll send a PM.

I agree with Mirrajay. We used her broker recommendation and within a few hours he had a very reasonable quote and we were insured! Me US, DH UK)Go with the broker... I know that in this age of technology it's difficult to 'talk' to a person, but in this case you really do get it done faster!

Just a suggestion - If you had USAA Auto insurance in the US, they will insure you in the UK as well. And as a previous customer, they would have all your claims history on their computer already for a good driver discount.

I also used the recommended broker but my quote is still very very high.  But it's because I live in central Leeds apparently.  It would be 1/2 as much if I lived outside the city  :(

so £1400 for me!

I would avoid Quinn like the plague!  Alex had them when I first moved over and we were in an accident.  They lost all record that we'd called it in (from the scene of the accident no less!) and were generally absolutely CRAP at customer service.

Another advantage of using a broker is that if you happen to be in an accident, you can phone your broker, rather than the insurance company. So if your insurance company's customer service is crap, as SlicesMissus' was, you don't have to deal with it at all.
