Future Expat from California
« on: September 07, 2010, 03:31:18 PM »
I figured it was time to introduce myself and stop lurking and start posting! I discovered this website about 2 weeks ago and I am on it nearly every day finding new and useful information.

A bit of background...currently residing in Italy, in process to move back home (California). I don't want to get too personal because I'm afraid of being judged but I think in order for me to get certain questions answered properly, I need to be... Currently getting out of a 4 year marriage with my "high school sweetheart" but the marriage ended shortly after two years but remained together in hopes of working out. Things progressively got worse and was in a very emotionally abusive relationship. I decided November 2009 that this was it, I needed to be happy. Spoke to a lawyer and started filing paperwork.

In February (9th to be exact  ;)) 2010 I stumbled across a chat website that is completely anonymous called Omegle, I needed a stranger to vent to and listen to my problems which just happens to be my now boyfriend that lives in the UK. I believe it was complete fate and he thinks it was pure luck. I am not one to meet anyone online but we connected instantly. He has been very respectful about my decisions in life and we decided finally on July 9th, exactly 5 months later, it was time to meet in person. So what was more perfect? We met under the Eiffle Tower, he was waiting directly under it and I spotted him from a distance! I have honestly never knew what love felt like until I met him.

Because I still live in Italy (for work and school) traveling to see each other has been easy and often but we decided that it is best for me to go back home and apply for the proper visas and start our lives together.

Now that I've written a novel and gave mooshy details... I will be a future California expat to the Surrey region!

Just one comment, I believe that as long as you are in Italy on some kind of residence visa rather than a tourist visa, you can apply from Italy and wouldn't have to go back to the US just to apply. Can anyone confirm that?
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012
FINALLY A CITIZEN! 29/2/2012

Hello! I'm from Northern California myself! Hope you find happiness in your new relationship!
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

I'm impressed you managed to find someone amidst the mass queues and tourists!

Welcome to UKY, and I hope everything works out well for you!  :)
I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.' Kurt Vonnegut

Just north of you in Bagshot.  Let me know if you have any questions once you arrive!
