what will happen to my car insurance?
« on: September 10, 2010, 09:51:39 PM »
Hey guys,

So, a couple of weeks ago I was driving to Luton for a job interview (which I did get, but ended up being a super creepy job that didn't work out...) and while I was in Luton I ended up taking a wrong turn down into a residential-ish area where all the cars were parked in the street, making it super narrow and difficult to navigate. Other cars were barreling down the road, so I over compensated and scraped against one of the cars on my passenger side. I popped off part of his side mirror and there was a tiny bit of scraping alongside the door (this is all on the drivers side of his car). The rest of the car looked a little beat up in general as well.

So, I looked around for an owner and didn't see anyone - so I popped the plastic bit of the mirror that had snapped off back on, and left a note under the windshield wiper with my name and phone number and saying what happened.

I didn't get a call until today, and he asked for my car registration and my address and what insurance company I was with.

So, I have never had to deal with this kind of situation before...what can I expect? Will my insurance premium go up right away? If I don't have any more incidents in the next few years will I be able to claim "no claim bonus" eventually? Does the magnitude of the claim affect anything (say, if he tried to get some of the other parts of his beat up car fixed up as well, not that he will just worried about that possibility...)? I was on my way to the interview so never thought to take pictures or anything. :-(

Any thoughts?

My insurance broker husband says it really depends a lot on your specific insurance policy. However, it's quite likely that the next time you pay your insurance, your premium will go up. He also says that you take a hit of about two years (on average) if you have a claim - meaning that you'll need two years claim-free before you get your no-claims status back. Again, there are a lot of variables, so he can't be 100% sure what your policy states. Hope that helps!  :)
