From Atlanta to Plymouth - New to UK & UKY
« on: September 11, 2010, 12:07:40 PM »
Hello,

I recently moved to Plymouth with my british husband of 5 and half yrs.  (Plymouth was his hometown area, but was born in B'ham).  We lived in Altanta, Ga, USA for 5 yrs, then decided to make the move back to Plymouth.  Hubby is happy to be back home.  I had visited Plymouth many times over the past 6 and half yrs and now it is my new hometown.  We have been here about 7 months now.

I am looking to make new friends in the area and new online friends around the UK.   We are an older couple (50 & 52), have no children, have 2 little dogs we cherish.

Hope to get to know many of you over time.

Nemie

Welcome, Nemie! Late 40s and childless here too! I'm in the southwest, but unfortunately still a long way from Plymouth. UKYers are few and far between in these parts, I'm afraid.  :-\\\\

THANKS!   Well at least your in the sorta local area, better than nothing eh.  I also have an older couple that just moved over from our previous local community (metro atlanta/Paulding Cnty) and they are now living just inside Wales, about 2 hrs from me I think.

I plan to visit them soon, so who knows maybe we can work something out one day in the future to have a meet up.  Shame not more folks in the SW, hmmm guess they don't realize it is a lovely place yet.
Thanks for the reply.

OMG, that is so weird, so amazing, so great, now that will make 3 of us that have moved from Paulding Cnty to the UK ihis year.  Us from Powder Springs/Hiram line, another couple we know from Dallas moved over in May and now lives just inside of Wales, and now you. WOW

I also have another friend who is leaving Carterville in the spring I think and moving back to Scotland.

TALK ABOUT A SMALL WORLD.  Oh I also think there was another guy from same area that moved back to Horkshire back early 2010.

We must chat.

Hi Nemie,

I am new on this blog.  I have lived in Spain, NYC, Miami FL and for the past 5 years in Charlotte NC.  I have been researching the possibility of retiring to the UK.  I just returned from a visit to the UK and France.  Definitely, moving to the UK is something that I would like to pursue.  I will be turning 58 in November and need to start gathering all the information on what to do to make this move.  I also need as much help as I can get on getting information on renting vs purchasing, and how to go about getting visas for a 6 months visit.  I know that all of these things take time and I need to start all my planning starting now.

I am sure your husband must be very happy to be back home, although it may be an adjustment for you.  I love the country side of England; London reminded my of NYC and I did not like at all; it is a wonderful city if you like to be in a hectic environment, but at my age you like a more relax surrounding.  I am planning to go back next year, but because the amount of vacation time they give us here in the US is much less that Europe allows to their residents, I have to start making vacation plans a year in advance.

I am looking forward to you or anyone response regarding my request.  I can be contact directly at by PM since it's easier for me to access.

Thank you in advance for your response!  :)

Elys

Hi, Nemie!  It's Marci.  Glad to see you on here, as well.  It's sad to say, but there isn't many on here from Plymouth.  There are a few around the general area, but none that are really close by.  Anyway, welcome to UKY! x

Hello Elys,

Sounds like you have your plan started and all you have to do now is all the organizing and paperwork, etc to get to where you want to be, in the UK.  I must say that I love the area we are in, as it is very laid back and very relaxing, which is exactly what we wanted.  We also brought our 2 little dogs over and they love it as well.  I enjoy having a nice area to take them out on walks.  We are right on the coast down here in SW England, so all is good.  I love to visit other places/villages/towns/cities as well and hope to do more of that in the near future.

As for the 6 month visit, you get that with the form you complete on the plane.  I believe that you can visit for 6 months total within a 14 month period.  You can contact the UK Border Agency and they will can answer all your questions.  I called them several times months back and they always were glad to help me.

Actually it's 6 months in a 12 month period.

Pop on over to the visas board and we'll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have...contacting UKBA is not necessary and not always a good place for answers.
