Apple Cider?
« on: September 11, 2010, 08:52:48 PM »
Well, Fall is upon us again, and I can't bear the thought of another Fall without apple cider.  I was too busy getting myself settled here last year to think about it.

I was wondering if anyone might know where to find some, or...even better, how to make some?

I quite like the idea of having a big ole steaming pot of hot apple cider all spicy on the stove when it starts to get chilly.  Or to chug down cold when I'm thirsty. :)

Thanks!

If you're buying it, I think cloudy apple juice might be the closest thing you'll find to American-style cider. As for making your own, I have no idea! Wouldn't you need a press?

I think there are some old threads about this in Food. IIRC, Copella brand apple juice is the best you're likely to find at the supermarket. I had luck buying pressed apple juice direct from orchards and farmers' markets now and then but they were never as dark and cloudy as US style cider. I also lived in apple counties (Somerset and Devon) so not sure how you'd fare in Glasgow.

You could try making it. Not sure what equipment it calls for but I found this:

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Steffunny - your second link doesn't work.  Also, that page is referring to UK cider (eg alcoholic) not US style cider.   :)

I've always used cloudy apple juice or in a pinch organic apple juice.

Hot apple cider, a cinnamon stick, a bowl of popcorn...  I love autumn.   [smiley=heart.gif]

I make my own cider (and have visitors bring over some of the packets for a quick fix now and again).  I've used store bought juice, but my favourite was when we made it with apple juice that we had put through our juicer machine.  I just looked up recipes online and then made my own mixture using things I liked from different recipes.  It really wasn't hard at all, so no fear.  Enjoy!

Thanks guys!  I was thinking that using pressed apple juice as a base would be a good place to start as it really does resemble apple cider the most, minus all the spices.  BF expressed interest in getting a juicer at some point, though, so that could be a possibility in the future.

I'll look around for some recipes and see what looks nice.  I can't wait!  :)  BF has never had it, but he loves mulled wine in the winter, which makes me think he'll really enjoy a nice cup of hot apple cider.

This is making me homesick.  I want to visit the apple orchard and the corn maze and the pumpkin patch and eat candy corn and build a fire in the fireplace and crochet an afghan.    :)
And smell leaves burning and watch a high school football game and take a classful of pre-schoolers to the library and.....   ;D

Noseovertail...2 things, first, when you figure out a way to make/create some cider let me know and second did you notice that if you abbreviate your name it is NOT.  Clearly I am a bored woman but I could help but smile just a little ;-)

1. I plan to do extensive experimentation over the next week or so.  I've got to make this time without a job count for something!  I'll be sure to let you know the results.

2. Hahaha, I did notice it shortly after I made my name.  I think someone had referred to a post of mine with NOT and it also made me giggle.  Reminded me of when I was a kid and arguing with my brother..."I think you're really great!...NOT!"  :P  :)

Hehe! We never did get this kind of autumn in Dallas, really, since it was still so hot until nearly Thanksgiving, but it was the kind I always wanted.  :)
