From the West Coast to East Anglia
« on: September 12, 2010, 06:32:00 AM »
Hello everyone! I was sent here by the lovely folks over at British Expats.

I am a 22 year old (23 in November!) artist from Oregon; a US citizen (obviously) and my boyfriend is a 26 year old UK citizen who I met online back in 2005. I first went to stay with him for a month in 2008 and we met up again in 2009 when he came here for a month. Shortly after, I went back to stay with him and his family for six months. I've been back since June, and I must say it's quite dreadful without him. The weather's been marginally better, but what's the point of being out in it if there's no colour left in your world?

At this point I think marriage is all either of us are qualified for as far as immigration to either country goes, whenever the time comes. We don't have much money, but we've found real love, so we're willing to do what we have to as long as it means being together in the end. [smiley=smitten.gif]

I've definitely been in that position, but the wait was totally worth it. I can't say it wasn't expensive and stressful, but being together has always been our priority and I wouldn't have it any other way. Good luck!
Arrived 12 Oct 2010/Spousal Visa
Whole new world for a Southern gardener, but I'm very happy.

Thanks guys! Big relief to finally have people to talk to about this stuff. The family always asks when something's going to happen next and if we're even "still together" because we haven't been able to get the ball rolling yet, and that's always annoying. Trying to explain the paperwork and money involved gains confused looks, and saying that the situation is VERY complicated and expensive legal-wise gets the response, "you guys love each other and that's all that matters, so just do it!" as if we're holding off, when really, we're just broke and confused. :-\\\\

My boyfriend wants to pay for a lot of this, though (and said that his mum may very likely help out), which not only makes me feel bad but wonder if they can really DO that. My bank account's pretty bare, part time jobs don't pay much, and I know some visas would require me to have X amount of funds, such as the student visa.

@June Cleaver: You didn't have to go to California to the Consulate for an interview or anything, did you? I've been worried about that for ages.

No, it was all done through the mail.  I did use a courier which sped things up a lot but I think I read on here that that service is no longer do-able.  (Someone correct me if I'm wrong please!)

I met my husband in 2004, came to stay as long as I could in 2006-07, fiance visa in 2008, married Feb 2009.

You're right about explaining things to friends and family, the immigration process isn't as easy as they imagine it to be.  Most people are surprised at the hoops we've had to jump through.  But if your boyfriend (and his family) have sufficient funds you shouldn't have any trouble getting a fiance visa.  Or get married in the US first and apply for a spouse visa.

What they will want to see is that he can support you without you claiming any UK government benefits... that between you, you have at least £102.75 left over each week after paying rent and council tax.
This is taken from another thread about financial requirements.

Best of luck to you and your sweetheart!!!    [smiley=heart.gif]

Another west coast (california) girl, though I'm up in Scotland :) With the funds requirement for the Student Visa, you just have to have the money in an account in your name (though I believe it can be a joint account? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong) for a month before you apply for the visa. Have you looked into loans or scholarships?

@noirem: Really! I was wondering if they had to look into how the money got there. My boyfriend was talking about wiring money into my bank account or something for it, even if temporarily, not that he has it, either.

There's a reason I never went to college here, though, and that's because I've been terrified of loans (and I don't know what to do with my life). I expect I'll never get to pay mine back and I will feel forever guilty and humiliated, especially if I get a degree in something I end up never doing. I know people do that a lot, though.

I also have a medical bill that's been floating about (thankfully NOT collecting interest) for three years, but because they simply remind me every month or so that they'd like to see money (and because they did the opposite of helping), I've been using whatever I save up for this instead. But I do plan on paying them off before I leave long-term, if I can ever afford it again without it damaging my savings.

However, if I knew how I could get, I dunno, $10-$15K or so for that with a minimal interest rate, maybe. I mean, people drop more than that on new cars these days. But, so terrified of never being able to pay it off...

@June Cleaver: Well, that sounds somewhat promising, at least. My worry there is that he's on Jobseeker's Allowance right now. His degree didn't get him very far and jobs are hard to come by as we all know. If he managed to get a job, he wouldn't be able to break away from it to come here.

I've heard it's cheaper to get married in the US and do the spouse visa route, though I'm not clear on the details. Not that there's anywhere for him/us to stay, either; I think we're both pretty much done with hotels after his last trip here, fun as that was. There's a slim chance I could pull some strings with my sister and her husband, but that's something I'll have to look into when we've found out more.

Thanks guys!
